Smoky the "War Hero" Book Has anyone heard about the little 4 lb. war hero named "Smoky"? He was a sweetheart! We read this while we were trying to decide if we could dedicate ourselves to Toto! We decided we didn't want to miss the experience of this amazing little breed. We haven't regretted it for one second!! ;) http://www.smokywardog.com/default.shtm |

Was it worth reading? |
Neat book, haven't heard about it before. I should look for it at my Barnes & Nobles next time I'm there. |
Yes, a review would be nice. Smoky sounds like a real interesting fella! |
Smoky Hi, new poster here. Yes, I have a copy of "Yorkie Doodle Dandy" by Bill Wynne, Smoky's owner. I wrote to him and sent a check after reading about it on the internet about 5 years ago. He sent an autographed copy. He seems like a very nice man. The book is very well written, and I recommend it to you all. You will love it. Smoky was a brave little soldier who was found in New Guinea in a foxhole. She weighed 4 pounds full-grown. She really was a little heroine. When the Air Force needed to string some wires under a runway, they thought they were going to have to dig it up. It would have been very dangerous because they would have no serviceable runway for several days. They got Smoky to go through the culvert pipe (it was pretty small in diameter) by putting Bill at one end... he called her, and even though there were some tight spots, she got through. She pulled a string through, and they were able to pull the wires through with the string. Bill Wynne only agreed to let Smoky do this if they agreed to have an excavator ready to rescue her immediately, if needed. After returning to the US after the war, Bill and Smoky had their own TV show in Cleveland. Get the book. It is a lovely, true story. :aimeeyork Alison (Edith's mother) |
Smoky Oh, one other thing....Smoky was a GIRL. In fact, she had a puppy during the war(father unknown) and it was a total surprise to Bill! The puppy died some time after of a disease that went around the camp. Luckily, Smoky never got the bug. Alison |
Of course, being a great Marine mom, I knew about Smoky. Spectacular story!!! |
I have read about Smokey several different times. Even saw a special on TV at one time that showed her and Bill after they returned home. They were old movies of how she would run around his back yard....don't know where I saw it, but I do remember about it. I don't have the book, but will probably buy it if I ever run across it. |
I thought the neatest thing was that he found her in the Phillipines I think, and then after he got her back to the US, the lady that lost her over there read about them in the paper and she only lived a couple of miles from Bill's house! |
OMG I LOVE Smokey and Bill - that was an awesome story and I could hear it told a 100 times and never get tired of it |
Bill Wynn was at the memorial for Smokey and other war dogs that was dedicated just recently somewhere in Ohio. Bill is a very nice man, and still has a yorkie. Habi is his current yorkie. I met him at the Yorkie Speciality in March in Dublin Ohio, both him and his daughter, were there. We were all sitting at the same table at dinner and spent the evening listening to stories that both him and his daughter told about Smokey. |
Yes it is a great story. I loved reading it. |
Loved the Story of Bill and Smokey. |
