I'm too scared... I'm wondering if anyone clips their furbabies hair on their feet. The kind that grows between their pads and toes down there. How do you clip them and with what? When is it right to start clipping them? I have heard that it can be painful for them to walk if they have too much hair growing between the toes. Coco seems to have a lot growing around her pads. Any suggestions or help? How do you clip the nails? Is there a certain procedure ? |
I clipped mine, and I think he's happier. He has better traction on the tile. I just took a pair of grooming scissors and did it while he was asleep, so he didn't move that much. And the best part...you don't have to worry about it looking bad. It's just feet. ;) As far as nail clipping goes, I won't do it. Their nails are too dark to see the blood vessels inside, and it's very bloody and painful if you get one of those. Ask you vet to do that, mine does it for free. If you decide to do it yourself, their are nail clippers and these things called syptic powder sticks (to clot the bleeding) at Petsmart and they are relatively cheap. |
I bought the little tiny hand clippers for 10-12 dollars and do the pads, tips of their ears and a hygienic trim on my male with those. It really is not hard to do. I also clip the nails myself, if you are nervous just do the tip of them and every week do it a little more. I think the more you clip them the more retracted the blood vessel will get. (I cannot remember where I heard that but I think it is true). Keep a styptic pencil or powder on hand if you do clip a little short. The one thing I cannot bring myself to do and do take them to the groomer for, is the hair inside of their ears. |

Everyone has great tips on this here - you just have to find what works for you - I do my girls ALWAYS - we have tile and it's slippery if the hair is too long - you can sit them in your lap or stand them and bend their legs - I prefer mine standing but only Chanel will - Cheri is too young to really hold still yet....this way seems to work the best cause they don't see what I'm doing - I use round end sizzors.....no sharp ends cause they can move too fast - |
I got one of those little Wahl buzzer/clipper things at Petco (about 10 bucks I think) and that's how I clip the hair between Tatum's paws. It's real small. We have all hard wood floors so I have to do it after almost every bath so she can get traction on the floors. I lay her on her back on my legs and she's never had a problem with the buzzing sound. I can tell it sometimes tickles and she'll wiggle her foot but never fight me while doing it. I also use that to do the edges of her ears and the tops of her ears and her hiney area. It comes in real handy! Now, nails! That's another thing. I bragged about how good she was when she was real little but now she's decided it's a fight to the death on that one. ;) |
