easy people... i know sometimes i will run into the bank with Layla in the car... windows down... 5 min tops... she is in her crate in the shade.. and when i can i leave the car running.. don't assume every dog you see has been in there for hours.... sometimes it is less than 5 min... she loves car rides.. and naps when i'm in the store... the people leaving the dogs in their car are not necissarily "bad".... now if a dog is in there for an hour... then i can see getting upset.. but like today.. Layla is with my mom (she LOVES car rides) and my mom is doing running around.. Layla will stay ni her crate for the 2 min she runs into various places.. and she is no worse for wear.. she gets water and fresh air and she is fine :) i dont' think she even knows we are gone! she naps as soon as the car starts moving. just please dotn' assume these dogs' parents dont' care... because we do it too... and we love her more than anythign.. |
Thank goodness it is against the law in Arizona to ever leave a dog in a parked car, even in the winter time when the temps might be in the 70's or 80's. A car can heat up so fast even in these temperatures. The police are wonderful and will come immediately and break the car window. Many a surprised visitor from out of state has come back out from their "shopping" to find a police officer waiting for them with a ticket and a broken window. I applaud anyone that reacts to these situations, because frankly I think the life of the dog is more important than someone not done with their shopping. This holds true also for leaving children in the cars. Many a time I have told people that have just gotten out of their car and are walking away with the dog locked in the car that it is illegal and some have told me to mind my own blanking business and kept going (aren't cell phones great for calling the police) and others have appreciated the information and went back to their cars. |
YUP, i have standing next to many a cars awaiting the owners to come back so I could give them the what for..... Most times they are just ignorant and didnt think about how hot it can get in a car, even with the windows cracked. SOME PEOPLE are just plain ignorant!!! |
If I offended anyone by my post, I am sorry. That wasn't my intent at all. I was upset by what I saw and I may have been offensive to some in describing it. I didn't mean to and I am sorry. I wasn't trying to say that people are bad if they leave their dog in the car at all and if that is the way it came across, I apologize for it. |

I would not apologize....I WOULD have done the same thing......People are sooooo ignorant sometimes......this owner was trying on clothes....and her dog was panting and getting too hot.....I would have given her a piece of my mind too......5 minutes is ok with windows down, but this lady was gone at least 30 mins..... Good for You!!!!! |
i wasn't offended. i wouldn't do it in the first place. i don't leave my kids in the car without the air/heat running and if i know it won't be long. so i wouldn't take my dogs anywhere they couldn't go. and if i take them i wouldn't go anywhere else. i feel you on leaving them at home. i think i would have been offended if you had put me on front street like that or more or less embarrassed:p but not everybody treats their dogs like children. i don't cause i got 5 kids already. but i don't miss treat the fur babies either. |
Hi everyone...I can see the oppinions are shared. Just from my experience...we were in town a couple of days ago and my babies are always with me. But I had to go into a shop and get a bottle of watter for my yorkies b/c the bottle I had was way to hot. So yes, I did went in and left them in the car(with the windows lowered) for about 3-4 minutes, enaugh time to buy the watter and come back. Next to the car there was a women obviously concerned about my yorkies, who was very rude to me when I came back. Well, I am sorry but I did not appreciate it, seeing that my windows were lovered and I was in the shop for less than 5 minutes, and the only reason I was in there in the first place was to buy the cold watter so my babies don't die of thirst of something. I appreciate that she was worried but she had no right to call me all the names under the sun without even knowing the reason for what I had left my babies there in the first place. |
I agree!! I have had to do that in the past... just on sunday I did. Granted it was not 80 degrees out, but my dogs were alone in the car for 5 mins and panting when I got back. As long as I dont plan to be gone for more than 5 mins they will be fine in the car. I would be horrified and more than offended if someone attacked me without knowing how long I was gone for first. |
Yorkies are so small anyway and being left in a hot car would not take long for the poor baby to die. I would call the police next time I saw something like that. I commend you for going in and having this woman paged! |
any other states where leaving the dogs in cars is illegal? Just wondering if there are any other states besides Arizona where it is illegal to leave your dogs in the car (windows cracked in cool weather). We occasionally leave the yorkies in the car when it is below 65 and I can see them to eat in a fast food place. (you better believe I don't take my eyes off them) I've had police break into cars when people have left dogs in them in the heat. working as a vet tec I've also see many dogs die of heat stroke. I've also left the car running with the air-conditioner on and the door locked (yorkies in crates) emergency brake on, so I can run in to a fast food place and pee! I've also seen dogs dragged from the back of trucks after they've fallen out of the back...A women here in NC tied her dog to the back of the truck and drove off! She got NO punishment at all, she said she forgot(#^%$!) roxanne in nc |

I for one am not offended by your post. There is a very big difference with running into the store for a bottle of water, or running inside to mail a letter, etc....and shopping for clothes at a store or having lunch while your baby is inside a car and with no water in sight! There is a more responsible way to leave your baby if you have to do it but yes, if you are going to the mall and know you want time for YOU, then leave the poor baby at home!! Not sure about confronting a person, but calling authorities could be the better way to go. Someone posted that some people don't like to be told how to raise their dogs anymore than being told how to raise their children....so does that mean if you see a baby in a carseat, alone in a parked car, we shouldn't be concerned?? Sorry but I couldnt walk away from that! At the very least I would sit in my own car and "babysit" from a far while calling authorities... This could be a huge debate I know, but I think there is reason to be concerned when we see this being done. I think MOST of us are responsible enough but there are those few that have come back to a dead baby or dead dog - it happens, even with all the reports out there. |
i agree that she was wrong to being trying clothes on while her dog was in the car, its extrememly outrageous thing to do and ignorant. and no i rarely take me dogs with me other then to family it events and the vets, once in a while to the petstore, not many places here will let you bring in pets. but i dont agree with confronting people on different levels 1.)for YOUR safety -you do not know this person, people are just plain crazy! 2.) you dont know the whole story ( sometimes) 3.) that person doesnt know you and will not trust you and most people will be defensive and arugmentive or just turn their back on you and there is risk invovled with confrontations or what THEY might call harrassment 4.) its really no ones business but that dumb individual and if you are that concerned, call the cops but make sure before you do that its not an in/out store stop, that the person really is in the wrong some people are extremely hyped about reporting animal abuse and i think some people are somtimes outrageous in pointing fingers and starting fights before they know the whole story..shoot some people get mad if you dont feed you dog high dollar dog food..lol you have no need to apologize, you did what you thought was right and if i saw a dog in a hot car for 30 mins or more i would report it to the store but i probably would not confront the person and would not call the police..the police need to be out there catching criminals no doubt that lady trying on clothes was in the wrong |
I live in Florida and right now inside my car is probably around 110 degrees. Even if it's 85 degrees outside the inside of a car can get to 140 degrees fast. I have seen dogs in cars with a barely cracked window.Honestly the police won't make a big deal out of it unless it's a child left in the car. I do know there cops that love animals and they would give someone a ticket or something over this. I take my dog/s with me sometimes but only if I know I can take them inside the store with me. I have gone with my dog/s with my husband and my husband will go inside and I stay in the car with the A/C on with my dog. I am paranoid. I think my furbaby is the most wanted pet in the world and would get stolen in a second.Of course most of us think this way :) For the most part I do not get involved when I see a dog inside a car unless and only unless I've been outside for a long time and I see the dog looks sick. Most people I think would be ticked off if you called them outside, mainly because they feel embaressed that they are not being responsible and most people respond with being rude and not thankful that someone cared.
