Bathing your puppy?? Hi, I was just wondering when would be the best age to start bathing a yorkie pup. I have 3 yorkie books but none of them really tell you when the right time is, they only offer tips. Our Lily is 8 weeks old. I am sure this is too young but I appreciate any replies :) |
I bathed Chachi and Jewels when they were that age. I just warmed a towel in the dryer for them and blow dryed their hair |
Your puppy should have had her first bath before you took her home. Start bathing her any time. the sooner you start the easier it is for them to adjust to it. |
thank you both! she did get her first bath but I wasn't sure if I should continue it every week or wait until she was older. Thank you again! |
Both mine got their first baths before I picked them up and I continue to bathe them weekly. When they were little, I always warmed the towel, too. Rebel is 8 mos old now and he still hates his bath. |
I usually baths pups at 8 weeks of age, after their first shots. But, begin the grooming process when they are very, very young, about a week of age, I start with trimming ears, bottom of foot pads, little bottoms, rubbing their little gums to get use to the teeth brushing process and clipping those needle sharp nails. |

I bathed both my pups within the first week of having them home. I know that their breeders bathed them on a regular basis as soon as they were weaned, so you can bath your baby anytime. I was careful that the house was warm, with no drafts. I also did the towels in dryer thing, too. When they were pups; they were on a weekly schedule. Now we are more at at 2-3 week schedule, more if they get into something in the backyard. :) |
You can bath at almost any age I think. When I worked for a vet. we would bath the kittens and puppies (dropped off in cardboard boxs) almost as soon as they were found by staff because often they were dirty or had fleas/ticks, which could really harm small babies. I would make sure the water is warm and in a draft free area and have plenty of dry towels. I would recommend a puppy shampoo because it would be the gentlest on your puppy's skin. Good luck. |
You can definitely bath your baby, just make sure you dry her very well.:D |

We are planning to bathe her tonight, keeping it on a weekly basis. I'm sure it will be an adventure:) Thank you for all of the tips. I love the warm towel idea, I never thought of that! Can you tell I'm a new yorkie owner? haha. Would you recommend puppy shampoo or just straight water? |
