Yorkie shedding :confuse8: My yorkie ,Furby, is shedding like crazy  I don't know what to do . He is such a happy little thing, but i'm going out of my mind:eek: I gave him his bath today, and there were hairs everywhere !!I bought him ,thinking "no shedding " and i just don't know what to do .please if anyone as any ideas for me. let me know . HELP, HELP. |
if hes pure yorkie i would be worried he has fleas or allergies or something more serious since yorkies DONT shed if hes mixed the only thing you can do is brush brush brush |
Furby shedding He's pure bred, so i don't understand it. My vet. said to shampoo him every week for a while with this special shampoo !! |
You can add shedX to his food available at most petstores use as directed;)I just used treseme' (sp?) vitamin K w/silk proteins on T and wow no knots, I know you arent really suppose to use people stuff. I am going to try to fing pet condition w/ silk protein :) |
that doesnt sound right i would see another vet |
if he is shedding and it is not because of a skin irritation or fleas or something like that, go to wal-mart in the pet section and buy some brewers yeast. we have a min pin that sheds like CRAZY and it has pretty much put a stop to it. now...during season changes, there is nothing we can do about shedding other than brushing. but once the season changes settle down, the brewers yeast nixes the shedding for us. is your baby full yorkie? they are not supposed to shed but I guess you never really know... |
My puppy is shedding too! Quote:

welcome to yt!! what kind of food are you feeding him? Maybe he is allergic to that brand. Yorkies do not shed so something is going wrong. |
I think something is wrong and I would get a second opinion. Mine dont shed and didnt when they were pups either |
I agree...it may be the food or other allergies. Yorkies should not be shedding!!!! not if they are full yorkie. Let us know if you find anything out. We found out that our min pin Rex is allergic to turkey. so any turkey in his food makes him gag a lot. so you never know, it could be anything. It certainly is not normal for them to shed so something is not right... |
I am definitely going to need to find out because he is a pure yorkie. I am feeding him Nutro Lamb and Rice Puppy Food. It is the same type of food breeder was giving him. I noticed his shedding the first day I brought him home actually. If you hold him hair will get all over your shirt. When I comb him hair will come off onto the comb in clumps and he still sheds after he has been combed. His shedding is minimal compared to other dogs I had growing up, but nevertheless he is shedding. Thank you guys so much for suggestions. I am very happy I joined the Yorkie Talk Family! :D |
Wow I've had 3 yorkies total and none ever shed. Not even when they were really tiny. That's one thing I love about yorkies. I really don't know any reason why a Yorkie would shed. If he is purebred and I saw that you answered yes. Then there has to be another reason. Allergic reaction to food or something else. What type of hair texture does your yorkie have? Do you have more than 1 yorkie or just one. Genie |
Don't panic yet...how old is your Yorkie? Yorkies do go through a shedding stage when they're changing from their puppy coat to their adult coat. Some people notice it more than others but as soon as the puppy hair is gone they stop shedding. I think my boyz went through it between 5 and 8 or 10 months if I remember right. Hopefully that's all it is with your Yorkie and there are no health issues. |
Don't worry as my two purebred 6 month old Yorkie's have shed since we got them as well . I have talked to a couple groomers and our vet and they say this is normal ...until their adult fur comes in . Mine get good food and I use a high-end shampoo on them , comb them daily and just put up with the loose hair ! |
Sammy is my first and only yorkie and he is 15 weeks old. He still has the soft puppy coat. So I don't know what type he will have yet- actually I don't know how to tell. I thought he might just be shedding his puppy coat before his adult coat comes in. Sammy's breeder sent me an article on causes of shedding and the top 2 were fleas and allergies. I never saw a flea on him, but my husband said he saw one- so we got him advantage about a week ago. Does anyone know how to tell if it is an allergy to his food? I am using the same type the breeder was using. |

Chloe's 6 months today (:cry8:), we got her on March 22nd and I haven't seen one hair from her? Thank God, I already have 3 dogs and a cat that shed like mad. Good luck :scratchhe |
I think it is some kind of food allergy. Diesel is going on 2 years and he doesn't shed. Even as a pup he didn't shed. They have hair and not fur. So it is to be expected to see a hair every now and then. We all loose hair here and there. I have never known a Yorkie to truly shed like German Shepherds, Golden Rets, Labs, Chihuahuas, and so on. I do know that a lot of dogs are allergic to Dried Beet Pulp. I use to feed Diesel the same food and his eyes really started to water. I took him off of the food and started feeding him Innova. His eyes have cleared up a lot! I would have him checked for an allergy or switch his food and see if it helps. He really shouldn 't be shedding like that. |
Yorkie shedding Like i said i'm feeding him royal canin 28,he's been on this now for a month. And if anything he's getting WORST ! I'm to my limit, just don't know what to do  |
Yorkie shedding O by the way,I forgot to mention Furby is 1 1/2 yrs. old cute as a button. And my first Yorkie. And i may add a big disappointment, since he's shedding .And thats the main reason for me,having this breed . |
I'm sorry you're so frustrated. Maybe try changing his food and adding a good supplement like Missing Link? |
He could be allergic to the corn gluten meal and the beet pulp in it. I think I would switch his food. California natural has some pretty simple foods. Chicken Meal, Ground Brown Rice, Ground White Rice, Sunflower Oil, Natural Flavors, Taurine, Flaxseed, Vitamins/Minerals If something like this helps then you could add supplements later. |

My four-month old is also shedding, but not a lot and it goes away when I comb him regularly and the groomer said that this is okay since he is losing his puppy-coat. But his eyes also water a lot. Could he be allergic to his food? He has been on the same food since I got him (the breeder also gave him this type of food). Could it be the wet food (commercial) that I give him? Please help. I didn't realise this is weird until I saw this thread. |
I just want to clarify that I give him dry food for one meal and wet food mixed with dry for his other meal (he won't eat more than this). |
Me too Ive noticed that Izzy sheds a little too. Its not much, but I notice hair on one of the rugs in my bedroom and when I comb his hair a little bit comes out on the comb. It sounds like from the other posts that this is not normal because yorkies dont shed, but I was under the impression that their hair is like human hair and when you comb it it comes out a little and you will find strands of hair around...mine does that. I dont have any issues with my hair falling...I have plenty of it! He is a full bred yorkie, maybe I should check into allergies too? |
Yorkies actually shed. Yorkie terriers shed hair. However, there are many factors such as breed, season, and health that could affect it. A visit to your vet should help clear things. |
