For anyone who has a yorkie and another breed. I have a yorkie (7 1/2 months) and a pug almost 6. They just started playing (after being together 8 weeks) and I find that they get so crazy and can play alittle to hard w/each other. Is anyone else afraid that the other dog can hurt the yorkie. I know that pugs are not that big (he weighs 28lbs) but my yorkie does not give up and I am so worried she will get hurt even by accident. Do you just let them play and figure it out. They are not getting nasty just playing rough! Any suggestion?:animal36 |
I have a 4pound yorkie who is 2yrs old, I also have a standard poodle that is a year and a half. Those two are the best of friends and play together all the time..They do get alittle wild sometimes...but I watch them and when things get alittle out of control I just put my yorkie on my lap to get his mind off of things...and things seem to settle down fine. My yorkie even takes his nap on top of my poodle. All as I can say is just keep an eye on them. I have never had any problems |
i have a 4 lb, 7 month old yorkie and a 6 year old 28 lb cocker and they play ALL THE TIME. Maggie is also very persistent and a bit rough with the cocker but it's like they know....my cocker has never hurt maggie while playing. now...when I first got maggie, daisy snapped at her over a treat and maggie acted like she was being scalped (she was TOTALLY fine LOL) but they have never hurt each other playing. |
I have a 4.6 pound yorkie..and my mom has a 95 pound Boxer. The two see each other EVERY weekend; and have become best friends. When he isn't around she sleeps with one of his toys...adorable I know. :p They play well together; the size it the issue...he is HUGE to her. But she uses that to her advantages...she rides on his head..or his back. She hangs onto his collar by her teeth and goes around the house. And he brings her toys when she is sitting on the couch and he isn't. It is the cutest thing in the world. |
I have a 8lb yorkie and 7lb Brussels that are best buds with my 55lb English Bully. They do play rough at times but no one has gotten hurt. |
Pugs are VERY powerful and pack quite a punch with their front paws....harder than you'd think because they aren't very big. I'd be careful. Yorkies won't back down. Hopefully they will just be best buds and no injuries will occur:) |

I know, Pugs are so sweet, but man, they can hit you like a cannon! They just have so much power in that chest and their brake system doesn't seem to work real well. They are irresistable!:) |
I have Cookie 3 yr old Yorkie and Lola 1.5 yr old Maltese . They don't get into big fights with each other . THey just tolerate each other lol. They are not best friends or enemies but I could leave them alone and not worry. Angel our 3 month old Yorkie gets along super great with Cookie and they are often playing or napping together. Last night Lola (maltese) growled at Angel the baby and Cookie jumped and ran and almost tore her head off barking and barking defending his little bro! He didn't bite her but he sure did scare her! I think different breeds can get along it totally depends on their personalities. Genie Cookie Lola Angel |
Sophie's "fur brother" is a pug and they fight like they are brother and sister. The rough housing has turned into annoying each other more than anything. At first I was really worried about Sophie because she is so small. I think Bosley was soft biting her like moms do to their puppies. The only time I still worry is when they are playing fetch. Bosley will literally bowl her over and not even try to get the ball! Aren't they so cute when they snuggle up together? |
My situation is the opposite. Jazz is 7 pounds and Mo, the Chi-Pom is 3 pounds, and they play rough. Sometimes I have to rescue Mo! |
We've got a 2 1/2 lb Yorkie and a 14lb Cairn terrier. The Cairn was rough at first but he's learned how to "play gentle". He clearly doesn't want to hurt her because if she yelps (and I've seen her do this when he's no where near her!!!!!!) he runs over to her to "check on his lil sister"!!! I've also seen him bring her a toy to play tug-o-war with. Braxton is strong enough to break Calliope in 2 if he wanted to but he holds the toy and lays down so she can tug on it. Sweetest thing you've ever seen. Just teach them how to play together and don't let them out of your sight until you are comfortable with them. Once you practice with them, you'll know what the boundary is. :) |
We have Miko, our yorkie, and Emma, our maltese...They are best friends :) Sleep together, play together, argue with each other. LOL ;) Miko is actually 11lbs and Emma is 3.8 lbs and they don't have any problems. He is very gentle with her, and she's usually beating him up. LOL |
Brotherly Love My Piper is 6 Lbs. and his Boxer brother, Beowulf, is 65 Lbs. They do EVERYTHING together, including play. We aren't concerned at all with the two of them because our Boxer is very gentle with Piper. We also have a Chi and an English Bulldog and Piper will defend our Boxer against the other two. Our Chi, Pixie, is a diva and keeps to herself but our MiMi, the B-Dog, is the one they like to gang up on. Piper thinks he's much bigger than he is, but he knows his big bro has his back. They even sleep in the same crate together or they will cry for each other during the night...so sweet. |
I would try to correct them when things got rough. My yorkie gets rough with my maltese but they weigh the same 4.2 lbs, but she is 7 months old and he is 3 months old. My yorkie also gets rough with my 40 lb 5 month old lab and my 70 lb 1 year old golden....she is just a tough girl, or b****, whatever, but I have to tell her "NO" when she starts to get too aggressive...it definetly looks funny when I tell her to leave her brothers alone and she is that small. |
