Random Yorkie on the loose This morning, I was walking my girls, when what should we encounter but a cute little Yorkie peeing on a hydrant!!! I had to laugh, because it was kinda cliche. He was a sweet little guy, and he came over to us and all the dogs sniffed each other. He was even trying to play with the girls too, running up, then scampering backwards and stamping his feet. He had a light tan coat, and a reddish brown colored nose. The problem? No owner in sight! I looked around and didn't see anyone, no open windows, no open apartment doors. This was right by the parking area of the apartments too, early in the morning. People were zooming through on their way to work! What if he had gotten hit? So I hung out for a bit, hoping that the owner would show up. After about 15 - 20 minutes, I decided I had to get back home. I felt bad. I couldn't just start knocking on everyone's doors at 6:00 am!!! So I started walking back toward my apartment. Well, the little booger started following me!!! He had no tags, no collar or anything on him. He looked like he hadn't been groomed in a long while. The fur on one side of his neck had a HUGE mat in it, and he was very dirty. I am thinking, great, what do I do now? I am gonna go home and tell my husband that this dog FOLLOWED ME HOME??? It followed me most of the way, then turned and went back towards the parking lot! I freaked out, and went back toward the dog and herded him onto the grass. We went back to where I originally saw him and let the girls play with him. I noticed that when he would run backwards, he headed toward the same two apartments. Closer inspection showed that one door was closed, but not latched. I went over there and he followed me. I knocked, and when the lady answered I asked if he was her dog. He ran inside and she was like, OMG, how did he get out? She said that she was on the phone and didn't notice him leave. I am glad I found his owner. How do you not notice that your dog is gone for THAT long? I would have been devastated if one of mine got out and was hit by a car or something. |
I's amazing you found the owner!! Have you ever looked online and just typed in "found Yorkie" or "lost Yorkie"...there are way too many of them. They are just so adventurous! I'm so glad it all worked out! JULZ |
You did a great thing making sure he led you to his home - I would notice for SURE if mine ever got out....there isn't ONE thing I can do in my house without my 2 helpers...I feel naked if I don't have 2 yorkie-girls at my side....I'm glad he got back to his house - it's a very scary world out there for dogs as well as us.... |
Thank you for being so responsible and getting the little guy home. I hope his mom will watch him more closely in the future! Imagine what could have happened had he not met you! :( |
A few years back, when I had my first yorkie, KJ, I got home from work one day and my husband had let him out (I can't remember how or why), It was a freezing day and he had combed the neighborhood frantically. I began walking up and down the streets calling him, I knew he must have gone under a bush or something - just freezeing slowly to death. I was devistated. About 30 min later came a knock on the door. A neighbor about 2 blocks away had seen him, brought him in - been checking all around to find out where he belonged. I was so grateful to her for taking him in, and coming out in the cold to find me. |
Laura - I can't tell you how good that story was - you were very very lucky and so was your baby ....so nice to hear a HAPPY ending and this thread is touching. |
So glad that you found his owner. Years ago, we found a little guy on a busy road so we took him home. Contacted the police station, vets, and later that day we were told who's it was so we took him home. Well, I wish we just would have kept him. It was like "oh, you got out again" no emotion and the poor little guy looked like he wasn't happy at all. I was so sad when we left that I kicked myself all the way home, I always have to do " the right thing" ... |
Good job!! I don't understand how a Yorkie can be out of the owners sight! I ask myself daily, "are we just plain weird?" Well, yes, I guess we are, but since I have been on this forum, I can't recall a single time that a member has "lost" their baby through neglect!! ;) I am so thankful that you were in the right place, at the right time for that little one!! |
I'm so glad you found the owner! We found a stray dog a few months ago & the owner was never found. He wound up getting adopted by a great family - but I never stopped wondering if the original family was devestated by his loss (he was a great little dog). Good for you on being so responsible!! |
Good on you for caring.. hopefully he has a good home and it was just a one off. Dogs have a habit of following me but I usually manage to track down the owners!! (Just as well!). Theresa - I can imagine how upset you were!! I notice if one of our girls goes AWOL very quickly as they follow me everywhere! I get hysterical very quickly if I can't find them LOL.. it takes an average of 2 mins!!! Ana xx |
careful bettyeanne - maybe you have good babies, but my little Bronx, he is fast and he is a sneak. We also have two teen boys, their friends are always coming around. I have forbidden the gates being unlocked. But I am telling you, he is fast, I have let him out more times than I care to admit. It is like he can focus on something far away and starts running - he is so superfast! He has gotten out at least two times when no-one knew it. We are constantly calling upstairs if he is there. We live near a main road (3rd house down) and all of us try to be very careful. |
It really can happen so fast. Especially when there are children in the home constantly going in and out. Heads up everyone! |
Whew! Thank heavens you took the time! Did she say anything to you or thank you? I wonder if this has happend before?! |
I am very glad you found his owner , you are a very good person . I really love to hear stories with happy ending . Congratulations to you . |

Ohhh! That's a good one! I'll have to try that some time! Things happen, but I really think I would have noticed if my dog was MIA for 20 minutes or more. Even if he didn't get out, there's probably a good chance that he's doing something he shouldn't be if I haven't heard or seen him in that long! |
