Yorkies and swimming pools Okay, I have several questions.....we are having a pool put in pretty soon and I was wondering how many of you w/ pools let your furbabies play in it. Is their hair okay afterwards. What toys do you have for them...like a floaty thing w/ cover, etc. Mojo is use to the water because we canoe and take the Jeeps to the rivers, etc. We will have a fence and gate all the way around it to. Just didn't know what you all do w/ the furbabies while you are in the pool. Mojo loves to ride on my stomach while I am floating on my back! It is cute! Also, need a good life jacket too.....where did you get yours? Thanks in advance! |
We have a pool and Vixxen gets in it - mostly cause she wants to be anywhere I'm at though! If I am floating and tanning in the pool, she will run full speed and jump to land on the mat I'm on!! Dare devil isn't she?? Honestly though, she doesn't just walk right into the pool, she's more of a sun bather and of course her hair gets all wet so she cools off. Her hair is silky so it is fine afterward - no trouble at all. Not too sure how Truffles will be though - however they both just went swimming in the lake with no problems! I think our life jackets are those Fido ones and the work fine and have handles on top that make it easy to grap them with. But I have seen pink ones so we may get those this year :D |
All 3 of mine have been in the pool several times- mostly as a result of chasing each other and falling in. My daughter does take her dog, Spike in to swim with her but he's much happier on a raft. Truthfully, none of them are water dogs. It has never affected their hair although they do get baths after swimming. We don't have life jackets for them. We are just very careful to never let them out alone. |
We have a pool and we made sure that Wylie really knew where the steps were - so that if he ever got out there alone and fell in - he would know where to swim to. He likes to fetch from the step area into the pool, but needs some encouragement to get started. It is cute when they swim. |
Lillian loves going in the pool its so cute watching them swim around...when she comes out I give her a bath right away cause I don't trust them with all that chlorine. I saw life vests at petsmart but I never bought one. They know how to swim so I never thought to get one. Or you could put them in a little inflatable boat like we do for Cosmo, hes such a baby. |
I have a pool but don't let Jaden or Jewelina in it. It's rather large and goes up to 12 feet on the deep end and I'm always worried if I get them in the habbit of jumping in the pool if they ever get out of the house somehow without my knowing it, I'm afraid they'd jump in and because they love water so much and because they are so small they can't get up the sides so whenever they go near the pool like they are going to get in the water they get a firm "No" from me. I do have a kiddie pool I keep on my back porch in the summer and I let them get in that and swim and they have the best time! I've not had any problems with their hair at all and I think Mojo is a silk coat as well? So I don't think he'll have any problems at all! :) I bet he's going to have a blast being in the pool with you this summer! Take loads of pictures for us! |
We moved into a house this past Jan with a pool. Until I am able to get in the pool and teach all three how to find the steps, I bought a Skamper Ramp that is for the sole purpose of giving aniamls easy access out of the pool. If you want to see what it looks like, go to www.hunterk9.com My boys are only out side by the pool when I or my husband are out side by the pool. We do have a grassy area on the side of the house that is for them to play and do whatever but we built a fence for that area and they can access through thier doggy door too. All three have fallen in the pool so we are extememly cautious of when they are around the pool but I am looking forward to teaching them where the steps are. |
i did until my dog got water intoxication. she was in the hospital for a whole day. |

Oh no! Did she take in a lot of water while swimming??? That is scary!!! |
Joy: yes, Mojo has silky hair, so that will be good. We were thinking about getting the salt water instead of the chlorine....has anyone done that before? I wonder if it would be better, worse or about the same? I think we may just get a kiddie pool and put it out there for him. I probably won't even chance it unless he is floating on my raft w/ me or something. I already have ideas for a little play area for him while we are in the pool, so that might work out. Plus, it will be fenced in, so none of the dogs can get in there. We aren't wanting ours too deep because we want it mainly for the kids (volleyball, etc) and my exercising!! Quote:

We have a pool, but Conner was just a baby last year when it was open. My husband wants to teach Conner this year where the steps are so he can get in and out by himself, but I don't know if I want him going in. Last year, I put water in a dishwashing tub, and that was Conner's pool. |

muffie can swim very well and for a very long time. i think i can get her a vest and this way, her head will be way above the water so that she doesn't take any water in. but i will ask my vet first |
Please be very careful, a friend of mine lost a yorkie to drowning in a pool. |
I have an inground pool and I was worried about my babies falling in so I bought a couple of "Scamper Ramps" and put those around the pool so if they should fall in they can swim to the nearest one. http://www.pooltoy.com/scupto45.html |
Mine LOVE the pool! i only have one that really likes to get in and swim around but the rest love to float on rafts. We make sure to teach all our dogs where the steps are incase they accidently fall in when we aren't out there |
