Puppy sleep help
 

Hello Everyone,
I have been getting lots of info on this great site. Of course I have a million questions, lots answered, thanks. But what want to know is how much a puppy should sleep. My "Button" is 10 weeks old and I have only had her for 4 days. I am living in South Korea and don't trust the vets as much as I would back home.
When she first came home, for two days she was full of evergyy, jumping, eating lots, playing, but still slept quite a bit. Now ( 4 days later) she is barely eating and is sleeping all the time. About 21 hours a day. Last night she played and then ate some food, after having not eaten all day. Today no food or playing. I have been giving her nutrical and water, but I am a bit worried.
I realized after reading ont he site that I have fed her way too much the first two days. Didn't realize they ate so little, am used to my Lhasa from home.
Any advice would be geat, should I just give her more time to settle in?

Welcome dardel! If you've only had her for a few days, it will take time for her to adjust to the new surroundings, and yes, little Yorkies do SLEEP a whole lot! I'd suggest waking her up a few times and feeding her and giving her water, to make sure she has food in her system. Puppies need to eat three times a day, once a day is definitely not enough and can make them very weak.

Sometimes water with a bit of sugar in it will help them 'liven' up a bit as well. I remember Yoda sleeping a whole lot when he was a baby, at least 18-20 hours a day, if not more.

I have had my Toby for 4 weeks now and when I first brought him home he was soo excited at the new surroundings he played and played and played until he just dropped. He was like for the first 3 days and then he started sleeping A LOT! and i was worried so I took him to the vet thinking something was wrong with him because he wouldn't eat and I couldn't hardly wake him up. But the vet told me he was ok... he had just wasted soo much energy playing with his new family he plumb wore himself out and that he was a growing pup and need lots of sleep and that he would go threw phases like this. The vet just told me to wake him every couple hours. Also, he told me that sometimes puppies will forget to eat because they are soo excited about their new homes so you pretty much have to force feed them a few bites then they should perk up and eat.
*Another thing he told me was that to give them more energy when they are down is to put a tsp of honey in 4 oz of water.

Welcome to YorkieTalk, Dardel!! Your Button is probably just being a normal little Yorkie! Our Toto was 16 weeks when we bought her and that's pretty much the same way she reacted to coming home with us! We took her back down to the vet's three times the first week!! :o I understand your concern about finding a vet to trust, expecially in a foreign country, however, if I were you I would begin right away looking for one to interview. Although I think it's pretty normal for Yorkies to sleep a lot, because they are so energetic, but you never know when you might need a vet! Our Toto is 16 months now and she still sleeps a lot! She pretty much mimmics us ... if we are up doing things, she is ripping around playing but if we are sitting down watching TV or working at our computers, she has to be on a lap napping!! ;) The NutriCal if good for her ... we give it to Toto because she is a picky eater and our vet ways it will assure that they are getting enough nutrients and vitamins! Tell us more about your baby ... we love to hear!! :)

The same exact thing happened with my puppies and it made me very nervous, since they had been bundles of energy. I got them at 7 weeks old, and from about 8 weeks - 12 weeks they were very dormant, stayed in bed, slept, rested and ate a smaller amount than I was accustomed to. I could only get them up to play with me for a half hour at a time a few times a day.

They have grown out of that REAL fast though, I assure you. :p

They DO grow out of a lot of things ... fast!! :) I am glad, however, that Toto has retained a couple of "puppy traits" ... she still loves to snuggle, nap on our lap and be near us! :cool: I know she probably isn't "socialized" enough ... she is with people but not with other animals! We don't know any people who have small animals! We met a sweet little Jack Russell female rescue, named Chili, at Petco and Toto hid in her bag and just peeped out at her! :o She was the calmest Jack Russell I have ever seen and just a sweetheart! ;)

Thanks for all your advice everyone. I was thinking exactly that, unfortunately, after posting this message, she started vomitting and continued intermittantly all night. Took her to the vet this moring, the worst news. She has parvo virus. Not sure that will happen. She stills seems to have energy a bit, and kept the glucose water down today at the vets. They are treating her. But not sure what will happen. It's really crappy being over here and all this going on. But glad to have this site. Will keep you all posted. Will decide soon what the most humane thing to do is. Also have to do some more research. :(

:eek: NO!! Poor baby! If it is early on ... perhaps there will be treatment for her. I have only had one experience with the Parvovirus. Several years my husband "rescued" a Golden Lab, named Buster. The dog was a thoroughbred and had been bought for a young man's girlfriend. The cute furry pup grew, they broke up and he was banished to a pen and very seldom saw anyone except for food/water [and I wonder if there were days when he didn't even get that!]. He was a year old when we discovered him and took him home ... then tried for about six days to get shot records, etc. We had talked to our vet and had planned to take him in on Saturday with or without the records. We had a huge fenced yard and when my husband went out early that morning found him lying still and he couldn't get up! We carried him to the car and rushed over to our vet ... and yes, he had Parvo! We were brokenhearted! Our vet told us the positives and negatives and that he would be willing to try to save him but not to be too encouraged. We visited him every day and the poor baby had IV's and still could barely hold his head up ... we just continued to encourage him and tell him how much we loved him. He recovered!! We were allowed to bring him home and for several weeks I would have to run home from my job several times a day and prepare him about 3-4 tablespoons of fresh, soft, bland food. The Parvo had eaten away his stomach lining and he couldn't tolerate anything else, but he absolutely thrived on his diet!! He was one of the most beautiful labs I have ever seen and his coat was unbelievable!
Our Yorkies are much smaller so I don't know if they can be treated the same but I am praying that they can! Was she not given her shots? I checked Toto's record and she was given five injections from 7 weeks to 21 weeks. Please keep us updated on little Button! We will keep her in our prayers!

Thanks Bettyanne for your info. when I took her to the shop tonight to go get more intense treatment, she was looking around and alert. It gave me hope she can recover. I am so glad your pup recovered. My question is, did your pup have any "parvo" associated issues once he recovered? Are there long term side effects do you know? I have a language barrier here and my biggest concern after her getting well, is that she will still be prone to illness.

I am so sorry to hear that your puppy is sick :( You must be heart broken...but have faith i will be praying for a recovery!

Do you have any idea on how your yorkie came in contact with this virus? Did she have all the shots? Do you have any other dogs??

Dardel, that's encouraging news! Maybe it's early and they can simply treat it! I hope so. Found this with some good info.

We were always overly protective with Buster after he recovered, but noticed nothing unusual. I haven't read all this information yet but so far haven't learned of any long-term effects.

Yikes dardel! Hopefully your Button can recover soon and fast! Have you talked to your breeder about this? And did they give him all the shots and vaccinations necessary before they handed Button over to you? Little Button is in our prayers! May she get back to her normal self soon! Glad you took her to the vet!

dardel, I am so sorry to hear that your baby has parvo. I hope they can get it under control and every thing be good again.
Button is a cute name. My brother had 2 small dogs named "Button" and "Bows".

Thanks everyone for all the messages. Still hanging in there. Button, is still the same no worse, which is good. She seems to not be vomitting which is great. Will know more on saturday, 3-4 days is the standard time for knowing about survival. If she can stay strong I have lots of hope.

I too added Button to my prayer list. We had a part boxer we saved from pravo once didnt see any signs od anything after. but where she was needs to be cleaned reaLLY GOOD WITH bleach. parvo can stay around for 7 years. espically in the ground.The vet told us to even spray the ground with bleach water. wishing you the best.. lost the battle
 

Hello Everyone,
Thanks again for all your support. Unfortunately my Button has lost her battle. I am very sad and wish her peace. I am also a little angry, the vet care she received from the place where I got her was not as promised. They kept telling me she was getting iv fluids and antibiotics but when I had a vet friend call and clarify they were only giving her sugar water. I am now in the process of having flyers made to hand out to the surrounding vets and poeple on the streets who may go by and want to get a puppy in this area. Being in Korea makes my options limited and I feel that this is the best way to warn pople about this place. (Didn't mention that before Button, I got a Maltese who ended up passing away too, and they replaced her with Button, saying that Rosie(my maltese) was a fluke and that they don't have sick puppies). Of course now I feel really stupid because they were so kind and caring, but now I realize that they must be a puppy mill. they hid it so well. Thanks again everyone, and if I am lucky enough to find a decent breader with quality healthy yorkies I will let you all now and be back again. Bye for now,

Darlene, I am so sorry!! I can't imagine your pain and frustration ... it angers me that there are people in this world such as the ones you dealt with!! Do stay in touch and know that you remain in our prayers!

I am so sorry to hear that. Hope little Button is in a happy place now... As per the people where you bought your dogs, can't you sue this people? at least get your money back? I know money wont bring them back, but that's the only way to teach this people a lesson..obviously they don;t care about the animals, they only care about money and that's the only way to hurt them.

Oh guish, dardel, I am so sad for you (and Button).
I really feel that some time in the future people will realize these dogs are much more humane than the creatures that are after a buck or two and be punished severly.

Oh Dardel! I bet you are devastated! I know I would be! No way should that puppy have Parvo after having her only four days! At the very least you should get you money back and the vet bills paid from that puppy mill! They should be shut down! Did your Maltese die from the same thing? I would be just livid! At any rate know that we sympathize with you and will keep you in our prayers and hope you will find a GOOD breeder and get a loving Yorkie to warm your heart. Pat

May Button rest her soul in Yorkie Heaven. You did as much as you possibly could! Yes, try to warn everyone around about the breeder and the vet that lied to you, I can't believe a vet of all places would do such a thing. It just seems evil, to do that, while lying to you and charging you money for it! If you do get another dog, we hope you get one from a good reputable breeder and may they live a long, happy life with you!

Darlene, I am so sorry to hear about Button...may her little soul be at rest now. There are some very heartless people on this earth. You took wonderful care of your little one. Please know that we are all here for you. I hope in the future you will find a wonderful breeder. God Bless!

Hi Darlene, I am so sorry for your lost. The fact that you had to suffer twice because of this breeder they should be locked up. They are just horible.

Well everyone, what can I say, thanks for your support. I will stay on and have not given up my hope of a healthy happy playful Yorkie. I will take some time and then will make a decision. As for the breeder place, I will be passing out a flyer (in Korean as this is where I am), and warning people about this place. As for my money back it doesn 't look too good, the laws in korea are definitely not consumer protective. It was the breeder who paid the vet bills and I am stupid for allowing that and not taking care of it myself, at least then I could say I did all I could. I know that I did do what I could, but I am so angry that this baby had to suffer. Well you all, I will say goodnight(it is nighttime here and time to go to bed). You're all great, and just want to say this is a great site.

Darlene! i just know that there is a happy healthy little yorkie out there with your name on! I hope you get to hear of a good breeder - are there many yorkies out there? So difficult in a foreign country with a language problem also. I just have a feeling you will do it though! You have had enough bad luck right now for things not to start going right. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you! Glad you're staying with us!

I only just saw this post too and halfway thru I had a feeling I was going to need the kleenex...I AM SO SORRY about your little cute as a Button - As I sit here with tears for you and Button, it opens my eyes on all the awful things out there..

It seems we are on a constant vigil to keep our babies away from dangers that we can SEE....we never expect the ones we can't see. MY heart just breaks for you and anyone else who has dealt with this terrible illness.

You're in my thoughts and Button will be remembered in your heart for as long as you live ...Good luck to you and I hope you find some happiness with a healthy baby soon...you really deserve it !
