Help save my new area rug!! Does anyone know of a spray or something that would deter a dog from using a rug as a puppy paper? Sawyer is great about using pee pads, or going out; but we have tile floors, and if he gets to a throw rug he thinks it is just a nice pee pad. I am getting a new area rug today, and just wondered if their was a way to show him the difference. |
That's a great question. So far my method is to put the area rugs away until the puppy is grown up and has some manners. They don't just pee on it, they chew on the edges when they're teething. |
What about spraying some bitter apple on it. I don't know if that will help but its worth a try. You might just have to catch:animal-pa her doing it and redirect her over to the wee wee pad. Good luck |
LOL he thinks it is just a "nice" pee pad :D That is too cute! :p But to answer your question...Petsmart does carry products that you can spray on your furniture to keep pets off (they don't like the smell of it), so if I were you I would try some of that and just spray it on the rug. Now I have only bought this for a cat (and by the way it DID work for him), but I'm sure they have something for dogs too - or possibly one product that works for both. |
If you find an answer to this let us all in on it.lol.......There has been quite a few people on here w/ the same problem, they have even had to take their carpet up it got so bad....they claim they put Pergo or tile done & the peeing stopped...I guess our carpet is just one big pee pad to them :) |

Me too! I would love to put down throw rugs again without them being used as pee pads! Hope someone has a good answer.:D |
Venus peeing on my carpet is the exact reason I put down ceramic in my living room and hall! I don't think anytime soon will I get an area rug, for this same reason. Most rugs in this house, she's peed on. That includes my bathroom rugs too! All bathroom rugs are still put up. I have a runner rug, that she likes to eat on, so she doesn't pee on it, lol. I'd put that rug up for a good long while. And I'd test your baby on rugs you can wash, like bathroom rugs first. When its 100% then put that nice big room rug down, but not before. And if you put the rug down, to find its getting peed on, pull it up, immediately after you clean it. Seems I never could get pee smell out of my carpet to where she wouldn't go back in the same spot. Thats why carpet was ditched! |
That's funny. It's the "sunday" or "guest" pee rug. I too have this problem, and my boys are 3 and almost 2 yrs old. I'd be very interested if someone found a magic deterrent that I could wash my rugs in. I have hardwood and I"ve been rugless for quite a while now. |
My beautiful area rugs are all in the closet. The only reason the rest of the house is still carpeted is because it's wall to wall If I take it up, it would be expensive, I'd have to redo the floors and and I'd like to move soon. According to a couple of professional carpet cleaners I called, there is no way to stop them from peeing and once they do pee on the rug, you really can't get the smell out 100%. Sorry to sound so negative, but it is what it is.:( |

I hope that's the case! I just had the Pergo done!!!! :D |
there are spays that will help this problem. If the rug has already been used be sure to use a stain and oder REMOVER First then the stuff that will reter return to the area. Good Luck http://www.dog.com/itemdy00.asp?T1=2...ory=Clean%20Up |
I wouldn't let him have run of the house untill he is totally house trained, and then let him in only one more room at a time supervised and for just a short while and gradually working up more time. |
Do you know how rich the person would be if she could invent something that kept dogs from peeing on rugs? Sure wish it was me!;) |

I have a floor mat that he used to have accidents on by the door that was small enough to put in my big washing machine. For a big area rug I'd just suggest simple solution and one of those little carpet cleaners (ours was like $60) And housetraining rather than pad training. |
