My Puppy Hates being brushed - Help!!! My Puppy Is A Little Over 13 Wks And He Hates Being Brushed - I've Tried Several Different Types But Nothing Makes Him Happy - He Barks He Bites He Growls And Squirms - Really Does Not Let Me Brush Him Without A Problem - The Only Thing I Can Think Of Is The Size Of The Brushes - Do They Sell Small Brushes For Yorkies. Does Anyone Else Have This Issue. |
Have you tried combing him? |
That's what I did - use a small comb - it's not as 'threatening' as a big brush and it actually does a better job in keeping the tangles out. Just do a little combing at a time when he's laying in your lap tired out from playing and he'll eventually look forward to it:) |
Reesee was the same way, slowly I have gotten her used to it a bit at a time. Just run your fingers through the hair at first. After that I got one of my wide tooth plastic combs and ran it over her very lightly. Then we graduated to the metal comb! ;) I sit her in my lap facing away from me and give her a nylabone to chew on while I comb, she does turn around but I just turn her around again. If she fights me I keep going, I dont stop until she surrenders  |
Conner also hates to be brushed. I have a small brush that the groomer recommended, and I take him on the bed when he is tired. Sometimes he will fall asleep when I brush him. When he sees the brush, he takes off so fast!! I have to chase him around the house. |
romeo is 13 weeks today and he is slowly getting used to being brushed. it took some time - what i do now is not wait to brush him until he has had a bath. he already hates that so brushing just adds to it. i brush him a few times during the day so he will know what to expect. i am going to buy one of those slicker brushes to see how he likes that. |
perhaps it is the type of brush you are using . . .do you have a pic? |
Lily is also not a big fan of the brush. I use a small comb, and feed her treats (cheerios) & give her constant praise as I am combing her. As long as she has a treat to chew on, she could care less about the comb. I don't know if this will work for your boy, but it might be worth a try! |
I had that problem when I first got Tobey, but Ijust set out to not let him win. He did bite at the big brushes so I actually found somehting that works wonders!! It was only $0.69!! It's called a scalp massager and I got it at Walgreens by the brushes. It's a flat oval-shaped peice of plastic about the size of the palm of your hand. it has short little plastic bristles. it has a little handle loop on the back so you just slide it on your hand and act like you are petting him. I kind of tricked him into getting brushed. I also found that putting him on the counter helped because he couldn't run away or get really squirmy in my lap. It may not be the best brush ever, but it gets the tangles out, and now he just stands there and lets me brush him twice a day. |
oh yeah, and feeding treats helps a lot at first. now i just give him one when i am done and give him lots of praise!! |
Sophie hates to be brushed as well, she yelps like I'm hurting her and tries to get away. She really doesn't mind to be combed though. So I think I will probably stop brushing her myself, save that job for the groomer!:jump28ib: |
Thanks for all your inputs - I have tried different brushes - not a comb though- so that will be my next purchase - I do know he needs to know - I"M THE BOSS even though he's cuter. |
I use a small, human hair brush. My shih-poo is fine, but Otis is BAD, BAD, BAD. I think he associates brushing with scissors. I need to be more diligent about doing several times a night to help him get used to it. |
I would try the comb, you might see better results or maybe he just does not like the feeling of it period. I see that you are a fellow LI as well as I am! |
maggie used to do this but she has gotten used to it (sorta). she pretty much sits there and lets me brush her. i try not to take her from playing with her toys to do it cuz then she is worked up and it's not fair to make her chill while she is in play mode. but she does once in a while try to bite the brush. we have taught her the "no bite" command and I use it while brushing her. it usually works. when she was that young, I would give her a different brush to chew on while I used another one to brush her. she was usually happy with that. she just wanted to attack a brush :) good luck..I hope it gets better. your baby will get used to it eventually. just stick with it. |
