Poisonous Plants? Hi! Does anyone know where I can find a list of plants that are poisonous to yorkies? I have a bunch of houseplants and yesterday both Roxy and Gibson ate a leaf and last night Gibson kept on dry heaving so Im really worried they might be poisonous to them!! :( |
I did a search and found this from another thread... http://members.cox.net/jonanyorkies/aapoison.htm |
You can also check this site, it has good info. http://www.yorkies.ws/toxicplants.htm |
Here is another gret site... http://www.aspca.org/site/FrameSet?s...nts/M01947.htm Sammi was poisioned by my Philodendron...It was hanging and a leaf must have fell on the floor and before you knew it I noticed she was drooling badly and wouldn't eat or drink....I took her right away to the vet...He gave me medication and some Hi-Vite drops for her liver since the poision in the plant brought her liver enzyme level out of this world... Ever since then we (or my mom) have no plants in the house |
Thank you all so much! I printed out the lists and now I have to go do some inventory! Im guessing I might just have to get rid of them, no matter how much I tell them NO! when they get close to the plants, they still do it. |
Almost every plant known to man is on that list. I know that Sydney eats random stuff all of the time. I don't worry to much about my house-plant leaves falling on the floor and her eating them. But what about when you are outside? Unless you are a botanist you aren't going to be able to identify all of those species of plants. And you all know that you see them chewing something but by the time you get your hand in their mouth...it's gone. |
I've noticed with bailey,, if he finds leaves on the floor (inside) he'll pick em up and chew it then spit it out.. Like " THATS NOT FOOD" !! So I'm not too concerned. |

When you are out walking your Yorkie, if you've got them on a leash, let them sniff around, but watch them closely. If they try to get closer and try for a bite, quickly pull them away from it and give them a stern NO! |
Unfortunately, we have a large fish pond in our back yard. With this comes hundreds of different plants. I cannot identify them all and have decided that I'm going to teach my dogs not to eat ANYTHING but their food/treats. This will be no easy task as they've already favored ants and even one worm *yuck*. I vow to spend the summer following them around and loudly saying "ick!" when they start to eat anything. If they can be trained for other things, they should be able to be trained NOT to eat plants, right? P.S. I've heard some sad stories and so we've taken precautions by stapling screening between the footbridge and the water so the dogs can't fall off. They're always accompanied by one of the family and watched VERY, VERY closely when they're outside. |
