Personally I really like Cesar's Way. That doesn't mean that everything he does is going to work with every dog, but anyone who can "rehabilitate" a dog and keep just one from ending up in a Shelter is worth his weight in gold. Each dog trainer you speak to will have different ideas on what does/does not work. I sense that Cesar truly loves and respects dogs and would never intentionally hurt a dog. Keep in mind he often is working with dogs who have major issues. When I see his "pack" at his center in California, I am awe struck that those particular dominant breeds can cohabitate. Even though I consider my dogs my family, I do believe there is some truth in remembering that they are a dog and not a "human". Anyway, I take what I can from his training, I think his heart is in the right place.

I have his book and CDs and have watched the shows. I've seen him with toy dogs, and he adapts his methods considerably for their size, but the principles remain the same. He focuses on correction for dogs with 'issues', so I think you have to keep that in mind, particularly if you don't have a problematic dog you might just need some basic obedience training. IMO I think he is right on for the most part. I too think you must establish yourself as 'leader' but that doesn't say you have to be mean about it.

I really like Caesar also but.. I don't agree on everything either...But then, do we agree 100% w/ anyone ( including our husbands) :rolleyes:.....

I remember him saying that when you come home your not supposed to go ape sh*t over your dogs....now when I come home my dogs are waiting at the door jumping up & down as if I had been gone for months...you bet I'm going ape sh*t...I could NEVER just walk on by & ignore them...I'm on the floor by the door hugging them & kissing them then I chase them around ...that will never stop even if it is wrong :rolleyes:

thanks for the opinions.. I thought it would be interesting to discuss. Don't get me wrong,,, I do love Cesar and I think he does amazing work. How rewarding must it be to get to do that for your career? and to know you saved so many dogs?! My only issue is that in his book I feel like he implies that unless you can walk your dog a lot, you will have behavior issues. maybe i am misunderstanding. I try to walk tobey, but it has to be a pretty long walk to make any difference, so sometimes i get lazy and just let him run around the back yard. I should be better about it though because I know he likes walking.

i guess i just found that you have to figure out what works for you and your dog. when i first got tobey, i was obsessed with doing everything perfect. I found that I was really good at rules, boundaries, and limitations and that it really helped tobey learn what was appropriate behavior around the house. i saw that the structure helped him so he wasn't confused. But I really struggle with the order of exercise, disipline, and then affection. I like to give him affection whenever i want!!! of course i do like the MANNERS that Tamar talked about on oprah. i always make tobey sit for things, like before he's allowed to run outside, or before he gets his food, and before i throw his rope for him to fetch. I don't agree w/ all of his tactics. I love spoiling my babies but understand that their are boundaries, but to treat them as they are "just a dog" I don't agree w/ at all. They are still individuals and deserve respect! Also...I looked into him...he never went to school for dog psychology. He immigrated over from Mexico and made it big. Everyone has their own ways of dog training and every dog is different and needs special needs.

I think he is full of it and entirely aggresive. I have a feeling that a lot of people take his teachings to literal and could possibly hurt their dog, not knowing any better.

I TOTALLY AGREE W/ YOU! My ignorant uncle doesn't own a dog, has 4 cats and is hooked on watching Cesar's show. Then he comes over to my house and throws his "cesar tactics" on my dogs....they hate it and hide from him when he comes over. If my dog jumps in my lap, my uncle says, "she's dominating you" whatever! She's showing me love. Then he makes her lay down on her back....ooooh it makes me furious! But he has really bad anger issues so I won't dare say anything. I just won't invite him over!

I can't stand it! He started doing his little "cesar tactics" on my puppy (she's now 4 mths old). Saying that I need to start now...whatever! Sassy and her daughter (the puppy) were playing and the puppy was getting a little rough (like a puppy will do) and he put her on her back and started yelling at her. So I had to put her away so he'd leave her alone. I can't stand him! Thank god my dogs haven't seen him since! And when I get my new place...they won't have to see him ever again! He confuses them too. He'll be the controlling, disciplinarian type. Then he'll try to be the cool type and play w/ them. But they won't play back w/ him cuz they're confused. Poor babies! :thumbdown

I've seen his show a couple of times. and think its amazing how he seems to turn around some of those dogs so quickly. Some of his tactics are ruff, and i wouldn't let him try them on my babies of course:P but they seem to work for the types of dogs he uses them on. oh well, it seems to work:)

I am 50/50 on his methods. I do think that he has some very good ideas and somethings I find a bit iffy. I do applaude the fact that he says no dog is untrainable. It definitely takes some time and patience. I think that it will always come down to different methods to match the animal and the person.
