how to cut nails We have a 12 week yorkie that we got last Saturday. Taz has been great and has not had an accident yet. knock on wood!! We gave him a bath, and I was looking at his nails. They are black-how do I cut them? I had a cocker when I was growing up and could see the quick, so I had no problem cutting those nails, but how do I tell how far to cut Taz's nails? Also how often do they need to be cut? Thanks |
You're supposed to cut the tips only. The inside of the cut nail should be whitish. If you reach inner nail that is whitish with a black dot in the middle, then you have reached the quick and that is where you should stop. I just recently bought a quick-finder nail clipper which is a nail clipper with a sensor in the blade and little green and red lights in the handle that tell you when you've reached the quick before you cut into it. It works really well and is for small dogs. Unfortunately, I also accidently ordered one from a retail-seller on ebay at the same time I ordered one from another online source. The ebay seller refused to let me cancel and the other seller's clippers had already arrived, so now I have two pair. If anyone is interested, it has never been used, is still in the package and I will sell it for the price I bought it for (the going rate) $29.00. I can post a picture if anyone is interested. |
I believe Mytrixie posted this very informative site.... http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/clientED/dog_nails.asp |
I am terrible at this and have made the mistake of cutting them too short in the past. So, I talked the ladies that do my nails into giving me one of thier heavy duty nail files. Now I just used the nail file to do Katy's nails, We are both happier. |
ok this is something Im curious about as well, my Pete is 2.5yrs and Ive always brought him to the groomer for his nails because Ive been too afraid. A couple days ago I decided to finally go at it myself, I have the stop bleed and a pair of small doggy clippers so I felt prepared. The thing I dont understand is no matter how small an amount I take off I always see a little black dot in the center, I decided to just do two clips or two small amounts from each nail. Is that really all it takes? Its been about a month since they were clipped last, I felt like they should need more clipped but sure enough they all had little black dots in the center. Any advice is appreciated, I figure its about time I start doing this myself:eek: :) |
