help! Carson's a climber! I don't know what to do. I keep Carson in a Petyard pen from Petsmart. Today he was out when I got home... I was so thankful he didn't get hurt while we were gone. We have a large house with many opportunities for a puppy to get into trouble. My husband thinks an Xpen might work better... any input? He seems to be able to climb pretty well. He's only 14 wks old and almost 3 lbs. Oh my...what kind of trouble will he be able to get into when he's full grown? teehee. He's pretty athletic. But seriously, I need some ideas that will keep him safe. Some days I have to leave him home for 4+ hours. Thanks! deb |
I don't know the difference between a petyard and an expen, but maybe a really tall expen would work better. |
I do know they make tops for X pen... I don't know what a Petyard is but I am assuming just a different brand... my xpen is 36 inches tall... I know they do make them even taller... |
The petyard is made of plastic, and only about 30" tall, tops. He seems to be able to use the side to climb. I wonder if he'd be able to do the same thing with the X pen, which is metal. I saw that there were taller ones, and also the tops. I might just have to do that! deb |
i wish i could help but i am having the same trouble! these little guys are clever escape artists! I know I had kikko in his playpen I like to leave the door open so that he can access his peepee pad but I block off a section of my room.... but somehow he managed to climb a basket which i used to block one end, and got up to my bed which about 2ft tall ... iunno how he got there! then another time he got stuck inside the basket, lucky I was home and taking a shower so he wasn't stuck in there for too long. This was all when he was little though. Now that he's more potty trained I am able to lock the door of the playpen ... but we still have had some cases where he got out... Sorry for the long post ... I pretty much wanted to say I know what you're going through and goodluck! |
Maybe you should consider getting a crate this way you know that he is always safe and can not get into trouble when you are not home to supervise him. |
Safe little guy. Well we use something like an x-pen. It is 25inches high. Maybe you would like to just get the 36 inch one like others suggested? Also I wonder if your x-pen is different from ours? Ours is made of metal and shaped like a rectangle. He hasn't climbed out yet. Yet he loves climibing and can jump up quite high almost like a little bunny! The other option is to keep him in a puppy safe room. That is if you have a smaller room with a door that you could shut that can be made puppy safe. We made a room puppy safe with baby caps on the outlets and since it is small we were able to unplug everything. The plants are out of reach, as is everything else. Good luck!:animal36 |
Benji escaped his xpen a week after we got it. So then we had to start putting him in the bathroom until he was old enough to have free roam of the house. But he still did jump into and out of our bathtub which is a really deep jacuzzi one so we had to make it all cushiony so he wouldn't hurt himself. And he also got into one of the cabinets one day. So it is a good idea if he isn't a little devil like mine is. hehe :D |
Thanks everyone. I think I'm going to start crating him more. We already use one at night, and he doesn't make a mess in it... so I know he can hold his bladder for 10 hrs or so. Not that I would leave him home in a crate that long. If I have to be gone too long, I'll bring him, and bring the crate in case I can't take him where I 'm going. Once he's fully potty trained, I can leave him in my office with Phoebe, who does great. She doesn't mess at all when I leave her. I'm afraid with an X pen he might try to climb, and get his legs caught in the side and get hurt. He's too smart for his own good! deb |
