How do I Stop Barking? I don't mind if Summerlin barks, really I don't, because that is her only way of communicating, so I know this question sounds crazy. How can I teach her when it is appropriate to bark? I have never tried to make her be quiet in the past, because generally she only barks at things that she has never seen before. After she has seen them a few times, she won't bark at it anymore. But when we are in public, I was under the impression that dogs had to be well behaved, and I thought that included not barking excessively. She doesn't bark constantly, just for a few minutes when she sees something new, so how do I curb this? I don't want her to think that she is never allowed to bark, because if I did that I would never hear that lovely yodeling sound she does.... :D any advice? Thanks! |
No one? Is this an all or nothing situation? Bark when she wants or not at all? :confused: |
I have this situation but i dont know how to help you. only anna barks at anything. she barks at her toys i guess she thinks they will fight back and she barks at lightening when it rains and people at the door even if its only my hubby etc. wish i could help i was kinda waiting for someone who knew the answer to post as well. |

Maybe you could teach her the command "quiet"? In inappropriate situations, when she barks, just tell her quiet, and when she obeys, give her a treat. That way, she'll know its okay to bark, buts its really good when she stops barking when Mom says "quiet." |
How do I teach the quiet command, though? It's not like she barks all the time, just sometimes when she does, it's really embarrassing.... and terribly inappropriate. I would think that I would have to encourage her to bark first before I could tell her quiet.... What is the proper way to teach the quiet command? Thanks! |
Ummm...You said she barked at new things...maybe you prompt her like that? Or by taking her into a situation that she has barked in, in the past? I don't know...sorry! |
I just spoke to a dog breeder about this. She uses the spray water bottle or the coins in an empty water bottle. She says they both worked for her. She did find the water bottle method to work best though. |
It sounds a little crazy but I whisper to mine, literally. I go get them, put them on my lap and whisper "no barking" in their ears. It helps but I can't say they never bark because yorkies are terriers and terriers bark. It's interesting, though, that when we are in bed, they will not bark, even when the dog behind us is going nuts barking. I have glass front doors and when someone or a dog walks by, sometimes they can't resist and will bark. If it gets on my nerves or whispering doesn't work, I go to bed, watch TV there in perfect peace. Go figure. |
