Hawks...thought it didn't apply to us.... but I was outside yesterday & looked up & there where 3 large hawks circling over head!!!:D ...I wouldn't have thought anything but after I read on here about the dangers of hawks scooping up dogs I was concerned....I watched for a minute or two & they kept circling & getting lower so I took both of my babies in the house...that could have been a disaster...now I keep looking up when I go out...glad I read about it here...Thanks guys the info here can be so helpful... |
Hawks def apply to us....they're birds of prey and can swoop up a bunny rabbit in seconds....many yorkies are smaller than rabbits so they would be a target....Even if they don't fly off with their 'prey' ...the talons alone can inflict fatal injuries :( I'll never forget when I joined my first yorkie site...A woman there had her little 4 pound yorkie snatched less than 20 feet from her.....she was devested for years over it...so you were VERY Smart to protect yours....It's always better to be safe than sorry... |

I actually heard that either a hawk or eagle (forgot which) can pick up a small lamb!!! :eek: And that when one of them (again I forgot which) hit's you in the back it feels like a gunshot because they are so powerful. Glad you got your babies safe in the house! |
this might sound stupid but how can you tell its a hawk?? or just a buzzard??:confused: |

Good job of protecting them. I say better safe then sorry, you just never know when they could have swooped down and grabbed one of your furkids. |
We have hawks in our backyard, our house is against railroad land so it is small forest. They do fly circles whenever the kids are outside. I always check before I let the kids out. Too scary! Although, my little piggy Maggie would really make some poor hawk have a hernia, she's heavy.:p |
I hadn't thought of a buzzard...but, what ever it was they had a wing span of well over three feet across...so I decided to not let it get any closer. lol |
Hawk or buzzard, it doesn't really matter...They're both pretty threatening! :eek: |

i thought we had hawks that always flew around but really its a Turkey Buzzard. I called our wild bird rehabilitation (http://www.theraptortrust.org/) and they said that a buzzard only eats road kill but i'm still cautious. This is where I learned they are not hawks but Turkey Buzzards. |
Last year when we were at Buellton Rv park I would take Rocco and Sissy to the park nearby and they would circle over our head to I would get scared and pick them up . Someone told me that they weren't hawks, but buzzards. They looked at me like I was crazy when I swooped up Rocco and Sissy in my arms. I was told the same thing, buzzards only eat road kill not prey. |
I wouldnt care which one it was. whos to say a buzzard wouldnt get desperate enough to try to kill something if their was nothing already dead for it to eat. that prolly sounded bad but i hate buzzards i havent seen to many hawks arround here we do see the occasion eagle depending on the season theirs nature like park here for them and people go to see them when they are in season. so id be leery. |
We live in the country and have two little Yorkies. We got Cricket, who is our 3 year old, 2 1/2 pound Yorkie because her original mommy decided to give her up after a hawk took away her little brother. The owner was so upset and said that she was afraid the same thing would happen to Cricket and with 3 children, she just didn't have time to watch Cricket outside. We never let Cricket or Lexi go outside by themselves. We worry about hawks and owls. |
