This is his third surgery and he is only 5 years old. I am trying the potassium citrate in his food to see if that will help inhibit the formation of the stones. I have a very wonderful caring veterinarian and a husband (who did not want a dog) that will do anything for him! What did you do for your little ones stones??
Jackie | Jackie,
Sounds like we're pretty much in the same boat...The ammonium urate stones don't really respond to diet too much either, and surgery has to be performed to remove them. Miko turns 3 tomorrow and he just had his 2nd bladder stone removal surgery about a month or so ago. I have heard that potassium citrate helps. Here is a link that might help you out: http://b-naturals.com/Dec2002.php It has helped me out a lot :)
Are you feeding a dry food or a wet food...Dogs who have stones should get as much fluids as possible and should have access to a place where they can urinate any time they get the urge. They recommend wet food, and if not wet food, then equal parts dry food to equal parts water, but I'm sure your vet told you that already :) Also, you can give him snacks that are full of moisture, one of the best is watermelon. They like it and it's good for them.
Miko's stones will continue forming as well because it is a result of his liver condition. Until we get his liver levels under control, his body will continue to produce the ammonium urate stones. Since the ammonium urate stones and calcium oxalate stones are produced in acidic urine, we need to try to feed alkalizing foods and foods that are not high oxalate foods..Just do a search and you should be able to find a good list :) Check your baby's dog food bag and check it against the list :)
That's what we have done with Miko, lots and lots of research on what foods are good and bad and such. We also juice half an organic celery stalk every morning and put it in a bowl for him to drink up...What do you know, my finicky eater loves it! It's supposed to flush out the bladder and kidneys and I feel it has been very beneficial to him. Well good luck, and if you have any tips for me, I would love to hear them. I'm trying to learn as much as possible about all this :)
P.S. There's also something called "Free and Clear" that is for overall urinary health that is supposed to be good for dogs with any kind of stone. I'll try to find out a little bit more about it, and I'll pm you. |
