Need Help - Dexter keeps going to neighbors yard
 

Ok all, I am hoping for some good suggestions on this matter.

Dexter has been going under the fence to our next door neighbors yard now for a few months. The fence is wooden but has very big gaps in between each panel and has a huge gap running along the whole bottom side. It's got cement that runs all along the bottom with it as well. We have put bricks, wood, concrete stepping stones ... basically anything we could think of to block the bottom part of the fence. We're thinking of using a wire mesh of some sort to run along the bottom, but because there's concrete, we can't just dig it in the ground, we're gonna have to nail it or something.

Somehow my little stinker knows of places that we obviously don't and manages to STILL go under the fence! Now, he's figured out that through her backyard, he can go through her rod iron fence in the front of her yard and go out to the FRONT of the houses! :eek:

Our OTHER next door neighbor kid came to our house the other day telling us Dexter was in her front yard and gave him back to us. Needless to say, we're running out of ideas and are having to go out with him every single time he wants/needs to go out, but would like to not have to do it every time. Even when we DO go out with him he will sneak over there! Like last night, we were sitting outside and he managed to sneak under the fence again. We called him and called him and he was literally HIDING over there and not making a peep, so we thought he got out in the front and ran off. After about 15 to 20 minutes, he finally made himself known and refused to come back! We had to coax him back with a treat (which he did NOT get btw).:mad:


Do you all have any other ideas that might help us contain our little 4 pound escape artist?

I'd use some kind of wire mesh, your baby's safety is number 1!

take him out on a leash or maybe get an underground or electric wire fence

Keep him inside until everything's figured out. When you let him out, keep him supervised, and inside an ex-pen. I think nailing wire mesh along the fence would be the best idea. Or, you could build a dog yard inside your backyard that is smaller and more secure. Good luck!

sorry no advice.. but just had to say hes sooo cute! hes got the look like "i didnt do anything wrong!" :)

With that face he IS innocent - he didn't do it I swear !! Maybe he's trying to dig to the Spy Girls fence & come visit ??

we have the same problem only it's my neighbors dogs digging into MY yard....it must be something in the Houston air....that was so funny he was hiding ...but not funny you know ?

All I know is I've done the same things you've done and my fence looks like a drunk carpenter worked on it on that side....I got SO frustrated back when they had a pit bull for a short time - I actually made a sign and hung it out there ....

It looks like I tried to block out aliens or something with all the boards I pounded into the fence....you know the movies where the guy's wearing a tin foil hat thinking aliens are talking to them ?? that's just what my fence looks like now ! It's awful. see ?? :D :D

ps...I had good luck with ceramic tile squares - I line them up and they can't dig on them..put them flush up against the fence...

plus it saves their widdle feet from getting dirty:)

The wire mesh is a good idea. We use landscaping timbers. They are long, and heavy (so they are hard to move). We had a real problem a year ago when the pups were small; they could just slide underneath. Then we used bricks, but as they got bigger they were able to lever them out of the way. The timbers have been the answer.

Rhapsody did get out once a few months ago, but there were no gaps in the timbers, and the guy who "found" her was very suspicious and wanting a reward; I truly think she was let out. Anyway. . . the timbers have worked! Good luck, Lorraine!

Thanks for all the great ideas! I will definitely have to come up with something soon. I'm paranoid every time we step outside! If he even goes to the right side of our backyard, I'm like "Dexter, don't even think about it!!" ;)

Yeah, I couldn't help but laugh thinking about him sitting in the neighbor's long grass probably giggling to himself while me, my husband and two other friends of ours are roaming around aimlessly calling his name. :p

Your sign cracked me up. I have some neighbors :mad: ; major annoying neighbors, no pitbull, but they could be aliens, maybe I should set up a sign! Course I have to be nice to them right now since my daughter accidently broke out one of their windows, sigh. And it's really their teenage boys that annoy me; the boys smoke in their backyard and are continually throwing cigeratte butts over the fence into our yard. They also have crazy parties whenever the parents go out of town (which is at least once a month). And yes I've told the parents, but they just shrug and joke about how they can't wait till they are in college year after next. . .

and they throw the ciggies into your yard ?? you know what I'd do ? Id pick them up and throw them right back over - maybe the'll get the message...that's terrible
