Anyone who has adopted an older yorkie.... Hey , I was wondering how hard it is if you adopt an older yorkie? I mean can you train them to listen to you and how hard is it? I am considering adopting a 1-2 year old female and have other dogs , and am worried about introducing them to one another? Any advice would be great, from someone who has done this. Thanks, I just love this site. You all are so great. Mary:animal36 |

I haven't adopted an older yorkie, but I've adopted older dogs of other breeds, and it wasn't any more difficult than a puppy. In fact, I feel that it is easier to adopt an adult or senior dog. That way, if you have specific characteristics you want or don't want in the dog, you can find one that fits your needs exactly. For example, you need a dog that gets along with other dogs, and the foster family or shelter worker can tell you whether or not a cretain yorkie gets along with other dogs. Sometimes you also get stuck with bad habits, but I think the benefits of an older dog outweigh the negative aspects. |
I have adopted older dogs including a 3 year old yorkie female. I also have other dogs and at first it was rather intense, but with time and patience she has become a very loved and valued family member. It takes hard work but the payback in my opinion is priceless. The only thing I can't stress is to think this through fully and not to do anything on impulse. Taking on this should be a lifelong commitment and not taken lightly like...well if it doesn't work we can always get rid of her. I have at times needed to enlist the help of obedience people and even behaviorists so just know sometimes a transition can be easy and sometimes it's not. Make sure you ask all the necessary questions that pretain to your present situation like if the animal gets along with other animals, kids etc. Look for signs that the present owner truly cares for it's best interest and they aren't trying to dump off a problem that could become your worst nightmare. |
My Robin who is now almost 11 I adopted. She was my first ytnr. com foster. You can see her picture and read her story by going to www.ytnr.com look under adopted Yorkies she is the 3rd one. She has brought so much joy into our lives and wew feel blessed to have her. janie |
1 Attachment(s) Bernie joined our family a few months ago. He was a year old (still is) at the time and had had a pretty rough life. I guess we've been lucky, but he fit in since day one. We still have some training to do, but he wants soooooo badly to please and he's such a sweetheart. After rescuing Mr. Bernie, I will probably never "purchase" a puppy again.:) Here's my boy: |
I got Pixie at 13 months old the end of January. Cali was 1 1/2 years old and Maya is 10 years old. She fit in with them immediatley, she wasn't intimidated at all. Cali was pretty jealous but it has worked out pretty well on that end. She wasn't potty trained so shw trained pretty quickly but still has quite a few accidents. I would do it again next time. |
