I need grooming help please! 1 Attachment(s) so i am going to do Layla's grooming now... and i want to buy a clipper so that i can get her hair on her body all one length (that is the best way to do that right?) First off.. do you know where i can buy a "starter" clipper set and second what do the numbers mean like a #10 blade or a #30 blade and which one do i want?? i don't want her SHAVED but she needs some lenght taken off... we were outside for about 20 mintues today (it is so nice out) and she was boiling so i thought if her coat was shorter it might be cooler for her. any help would be great.. im new at this and just want to do a great job!! I'll include a picture of her coat the length it is now... if that helps at all. |
I can't tell you where a good place to buy a starter kit would be but the numbers are the smaller the number, the longer the hair. In other words, a 3 blade would give you longer hair than a 5. Good luck! You are brave!:D |

Oh my you are a brave soul. I wish you luck, I'm sure you'll do great. ;) Please let me know if you come up with a way to keep her still, Gizmo hollers and acts like I'm torturing him...if I could just find some clippers that don't vibrate and make noise. Groomers actually want extra to handle him, and I quite understand. Mama's little ragamuffin, we'll love it anyway. |

Hi There. I Do Cut Harveys Hair And Nails Myself, Because I Just Couldnt Bring Myself To Leave Him With Anyone To Be Groomed Properley. I Only Use Sissors For Cutting His Hair, As He Just Goes Nuts If I Try To Use My Husbands Hair Clippers (he Doesnt Know That I Tried - Ha Ha Ha). I Find The Sissors Are Ok, I Just Cut Him In The Puppy Cut, But I Also Do All Around His Eyes - I Hate It When They Get Hair In Eyes. I Cut Him First, Then I Bath Him In The Kitchen Sink, And Then I Wrap Him In A Fluffy Towel And Trim His Nails, I Only Take Off The Ends And Do Them Every 3-4 Weeks. This Keeps Them Short, And With Him Just Having Had His Bath The Nails Are Softer And Easier To Cut. The First Time I Did It I Thought Harvey Would Go Crazy, But Ot My Amazement He Just Let Me Do It. It All Gets Easier And You Will Get Better The More You Practice, You Will Be Just Fine. I Must Just Say Your Layla Looks So Like My Harvey, Same Colouring And Face, They Look Like The Same Size Too - Harvey Is 13 Months Old And Weighs 3.5 Lb. Good Luck - And Just Be Brave............ |
i think ill shave mine down last time i did it grew back in like 4 months |
I tried grooming myself too I was desperate but it was too much work and poor punkin still has uneven hair |
Petedge has the best prices. It also tells you what each # blade is used for. Good luck with your baby. You will get the hang of it really fast. The first two times are a bit scary, but after that is a breeze. ;) |
I just took a close up look of your girl and she has a beautiful coat. I wouldn't cut it any shorter at all. Fact is, long hair dogs will actually get hotter when their hair is cut. The hair keeps them cooler. |
it is a piece of cake...........What I did was order a DVD on ebay. This lady owns her own grooming shop and she made a DVD which tells everything about grooming yorkies. She even goes through 4 different cuts. I do everything now ......nails, pads, anal glands, hair in ears......etc. I cannot see taking my baby to a groomer who I do not know what they are doing to her !!!!!! Then after paying 30.00 she is not cut the way I want. It is really easy....go for it !! |
i prefer to cut hair with a blade. Scissors run the risk of you cutting them. Sometimes you just can't see where the hair begins and the skin ends. i've seen many lacerations from owners who thought they could do it themselves with scissors and just ended up cutting a huge hole in their dog. blades are safer. you can't really cut the dog, but you can give them razor burn of you shave too close |
Good luck w/grooming! I am blessed to have an a plus groomer because if I had to do it myself, i think i would die |
She is darling Layla has a beautiful coat. I wouldn't dream of cutting it. If you are concerned about what happens when she is groomed at PetSmart, could you stay & watch? Good Luck:) |
