How well does your yorkie walk on a leash? Milli is pretty well behaved while on her leash, probably because she's so little that she knows she won't get anywhere if she does try and pull. Emma, on the other hand, pulls like you wouldn't believe on the leash, and I'm not sure what to do about it. We took her to puppy classes when she was 5 months old, and practiced there. To me it was a waste of time (Petco classes=bust). We've been walking Emma and Milli each night, and Emma doesn't like to walk next to us, and pulls, goes off to sniff, etc. I keep her on a really short leash, but it looks like I'm being mean to her since it's so short and she can't move anywhere other than where I want her to. Any advice? |
I have Cali who likes to run ahead, Pixie who isn't use to walking on a leash and Maya who pokes a long. Yesterday I had all 3 with me and all of them decided not to walk anymore. Luckily a neighbor kid came by and he carried Pixie and I carried the other two. |
I use the Easy Walker harness on Banjo with a retractable leash. He used to pull all of the time, you would think he was pulling a sled:) The easy walker harness stops him pulling yet he still has the freedom of sniffing and running where he wants. When he is at the end of leash he knows to stop, and wait for me to catch up ha ha. I like him to have the freedom to sniff and go where he wants (as far as the retractable leash will let him) I only shorten it when cars come along or other dogs. Check out their website.:) |

we look classes at petsmart... and when it came to heeling .. it just wasn't going to work for us.. i think because our pups are so small and at one time or another they have been accidentily kicked or stepped on.. they are a little foot shy... at least Layla is.. so i don't force her to walk next to me because it stresses her out.. she tends to walk ahead.. which i know.. people say makes them think they have the power.. but she loves her walks.. i love the walks.. and this is how she wants to do it :) |
Siu Pao pulls like no tomorrow unless he is tired after we walked a certain distance then he would just walk nicely right next to me but when he pulls, he really pulls very hard and he is 9lbs. If we are walking through a very busy street, he doesn't pull but he prefers to walk in front of me. Occasionally, if he is unsure, he'd turn around to look at me or if it gets too much for him, he'd ask me to carry him for the rest of the walk. |
Conner likes to walk ahead of me. He walks really fast, then when he finds a smell he likes, he does not want to move. He now knows the phrase, "Conner, I'll pick you up!!" Then he moves like there is no tomorrow - he does not like to be carried on his walks. |
Loves to walk My 3 year old, Winston walks VERY well when there's a sidewalk, like he's really concentrating...but when the sidewalk ends so does his concentration...then he just zig-zags all over the place, until we get to another sidewalk then he walks straight ahead again. I guess he needs the structure, without it he doesn't seem to know what to do, and neither do I. |
http://www.premier.com/index.cfm Click on this link then at the top click on the Easy Walker I really like this harness, stops the pulling, the leash is attached to a ring on the front of the chest, not on the back like most harness's:) |
Hi, my Trixie hates the leash. She turns around and bites it  Pia insists on being carried and when she is on a leash she does very well. I guess thats because she has to be by my side 24/7 and Trixie is very nosey and wants to take off. I think they'd get better but they are very seldom on a leash, so its not their fault. ;) |
I have two "pullers" here. They also have to stop and smell everything. |

Katy pulls but only a little. Most of the time it is when she knows that there are dogs in the yard that we are passing and she wants to peek in thier yards. She actually walks much better when we do not have a leash. She just stays with me then. |
Teddy pulls like never before and the fact that he chokes himself doesn't make him stop. London looks at me like what the heck is wrong with me if I put a leash on her |
Marcel is just starting, so we'll see for him - he does surprising well for 4.5 months old, though. Wylie does GREAT and loves walks. We took him to training class at the AZ Humane Ass'n - wonderful, wonderful class and trainer. Does your ass'n have classes? Maybe they're better than petsmart? |
