I live in Rockland County NY and they fly all over my condo development.
They live in the trees that surround the Hudson River, now we also have
the American Bald Eagle returning here as well. Beautiful site!
Some hawks are larger than other's and their wing span is huge!
I would say most diffeniatly they would have no problem carrying off
a 3lb yorkie.
Bud weighs too much, the hawk would never get off the ground:D
Please tell you Dad to put a leash on his pup and keep a watchfull
eye on him.

Animal Rescue states that hawks have been known to take 4 to 5 pound animals. We have two huge hawks around our house...the family next to us has/had lots of pet/wild bunnies. The hawks have killed all of them. One day I was sitting out by our pool and a hawk flew over me with a HUGE snake in its talons. (the snake was at least 3 to 4 feet long) :eek: Needless to say, I keep my little guy on a leash.:Puppy2:

remember that I guess...I will have to be careful, I know we have had owl and eagle sightings within the city limits, I do usually have them on a leash in the yard w/ me, they hate any sort of pen, the only time I do not is first thing in the morning:animal36 when they do their business right away and then want Breakfast Time...

Ever watch National Geographic? Eagles have been known to carry off small lambs. Can't say I know how big a baby lamb is, but I would dare say that they are bigger than any yorkie. Hawks are smaller than eagles, but not by too much.

Where I am in Nova Scotia Canada a friend told me of someone he knew. Whose mother was on the front porch of her house and an eagle swooped down and picked up her 12lb cat.:eek: there are power pylons around here with Osprey (fish hawks) nests on them and at the bottom of the pylon are cat and dog collars. :( So take care people. A hawk can and will carry of your Yorkie if it has the chance.

I don't want to scare you but a hawk can take a rabbit - why would he think they couldn't take a yorkie ?? Some rabbits get pretty big

A friend had her yorkie snatched by a hawk less than 20 feet from her :( :....it really happens and even if the bird doesn't 'fly' off with the dog - the talons alone can hurt or kill them...they're a MAJOR predator and please be very careful

It is very hard for me to talk about this, but here goes. Last year, I nursed my very sick, most beloved little male Yorkie, Tigger. After weeks of nursing him, holding him, comforting him and staying with him constantly, he was TAKEN BY A HAWK on the night that I left him for just a couple of hours. He weighed just over 4 lbs, and this horrible creature lifted himn like he weighed nothing. It broke my heart, totally shattered me.... I cried for weeks, not days, imagining the terror my little defenseless baby must have felt during the last seconds of his life. If he was going to die, I wanted him to go feeling safe, loved in the comfort of his Mommys arms.
I should say that my dogs are ALWAYS inside, they are NEVER let out alone into my garden. But, there is a small enclosed dog run on the side of my house, which they access through a small doggie door. I thought it was safe, because it was so hidden, so sheltered, and yet still that hawk dove down and took my little Tigger. We found his little T-shirt the next day, with that monster bird perched just feet away on my fountain!!!!
If you think there is even the SMALLEST RISK of a hawk taking your animal, please, please, please take whatever precautions you have to. I have since covered the entire length of my dog run.
I am crying still as I am typing this post, with that image of my precious boy seared into my brain. Do NOT let this happen to any of your babies.... they are so innocent, so defenseless and can do nothing to protect themselves; they rely totally on us for that.:( :( :(

Thank you.... it has taken me so long to get over the way he died, that is why when I saw this thread, I could not keep quiet.... I wish I could broadcast this warning to every small dog/animal owner that lives in these areas, where these birds stalk their prey.

I'm terrified of hawks!!! Everytime i let my dogs out i go out with them to make sure that nothing gets them! i can't even imagine what people who have had their dogs taken by one go through!

I live smack in the city of Madison and I see hawks all the time. Last Spring one scooped up a rabbit that had just come out from under a bush not 2 feet from me. Scared the daylights out of me.
