Question about adjusting to a new puppy Hi everyone... most of you know, I have Phoebe, who will be one tomorrow(!). We brought Carson, our little boy, home about 2 weeks ago and he's almost 14 weeks. So here's my question. Sometimes they get along fine. But sometimes, when Carson wants to play, it seems like Phoebe is getting mad. I don't know how much to let them work it out, and if I should get after Phoebe to be nice about it. I try to tone Carson down when he's getting too crazy for her. When we play fetch they seem to work it out okay, though Phoebe gets annoyed if he touches her once she's retrieved the toy. I just don't know how much to let her get after him, or if I should just let them be. I don't want her to be mean, but I also don't want him to think he can pick on her. I'd really like to hear how others of you have coped with adding the second one. Phoebe has always been pretty mellow, but she's showing more attitude now with Carson here. Thanks in advance! deb |
My 2 were around that age at one stage together. . We all no what lill pups are like, they are so full of energy. Pheobe being that bit older has probably calmed down a lot more. I think if you let them go at it for awhile pheobe will put carson in his place. This is probably very overwhelming for Pheobe. I wouldnt worry to much, as im sure when they get the domiance thing sorted out they will be best of buddys. Thats what I done with mine, and they get on like ahouse on fire. AT Last. lol |

hhhmmm I don't know if this helps but I got my 2 boys at the same time, they were from the same liter. Sometimes they seem to get on each others nerves (this is more recent too) but I make a noise and poke the troublemaker with one finger to get his attention. I learned that on the Dog Whisperer. The culprit immediately stops the bad behavior! They hate that, its annoying to them. The noise I make is kind of like a hissing noise between my teeth! Hope that helps! |
Right now she is showing him that she is the boss. Generally females are very territorial in that way (and is the reason females are taken to the males house for breeding). Let her get her point accross to him but don't let it get too aggressive either. They "both" have to know that your the alpha and what you say, goes! |
When I got Pixie she was 13 months old and Cali was 18 months old. Cali is laid back and Pixie is a wild women. The first 4-6 weeks Cali was pretty upset and Pixie jumping at her upset her and she showed some attitude I didn't know she has. Now they play/fight together and Cali seems to like it. They lay together a lot now too. It's been almost 3 months and I am so glad I got the 2nd Yorkie. I also let them work out their tiffs unless Pixie is really going after Cali. |
I Just Got My New Yorkie IN THE BEG. OF MARCH AND I HAVE A 5YR OLD PUG. MY PUG WANTED NOTHING TO DO WITH THE YORKIE AND SHE WANTED EVERYTHING TO DO WITH THE PUG. I JUST ALLOW THEM TO WORK IT OUT. THE ONLY TIME I GET INVOLVED IS IF I SEE THAT ONE OF THEM LOOKS LIKE THEY ARE GOING TO TRY TO BITE THE OTHER ONE. I AM SURE IN NO TIME THEY WILL BE BEST PALS.:animal36 |
Thanks, everyone. It's good to get confirmation of what I was thinking anyway. Basically, I've been doing just what was said. I let them work it out to a point, but if Phoebe is getting to mad, I poke her and say "ch!", but if he's being persistently annoying even after she's said no, I get after him. deb |
Just make sure that Phoebe doesn't feel as though you are nicer to the little one than to her. She will grow to dislike the puppy if she feels this way. |
