Help - new pup is crying everytime i walk away Hi everybody, I just got 2 new pups: a Yorkie and a Maltese (both 10 weeks old). My maltese has been pretty independent for the most part unless he's really in the mood to play, but my Yorkie seems to be crying nearly all the time when not getting attention.. I can be in the room but if i'm not there in their big ole play pen with them, then my yorkie starts crying and crying and crying.. does that when i leave the room also.. Is this normal? Has anyone else experienced this, and if so, how long did it last.. it drives me crazy leavin my lil yorkie there when he's all sad :( |
As long as you've ruled out any pain or sickness, then ignore it or you will be reinforcing the behavior, wait until he is completely quiet before picking him up. |
How long have you had them? If it's only been a couple of days, it may be a little longer. You have to consider where he came from, did he have run of the house where he was? Did he have other siblings with him all the time? Although it is good you bought 2 pups at the same time, so that they can keep each other company, he still has to get used to being away from his litter mates and his yorkie mommy. Just hang in there, it'll get better. Definitely don't let him get the upper hand, he'll quickly learn that if he cries he will get what he wants. I'm going through this right now with a 6 month old yorkie that was returned to me a few weeks ago. He was a pup that I sold to a family who would let him have what he wanted when he cried, so I am having to break him of it. Believe me it will get better, you just have to be consistent with him, he'll learn. Good Luck! |
i got my baby a little more than 2 weeks ago and just like your pup he is 10 weeks old...he used to cry and cry and cry when i left his sight but i just had to be strong and not encourage his behaviour by giving him attention when he cries...i know it is very heart breaking and you feel horrible but over the time, they actually get used to your pattern and learn that they cannot rule you with their cute puppy cries hehehe... roscoe still cries a bit when i am about to leave for work or go to bed (as he sleeps in his crate) but he gets better and better each day... my best suggestion would be to get some ear plugs and ignore each time the puppy cries for your attention... |
Take them outside every hour to potty and let them play and run till they are tired. Have a toy and femur bones for them to play with and chew on when you bring them back in and put in their expen. Ignore the cry. |
My boy puppy did this when I first got him....boy was it a shock aftter my independent girl puppy! he did get better though....he's still a cuddly sook which is actually lovely now. We have taught him to wait at the door for us when we leave the room and its gorgeous to see him lying by the door when we come back! He will probably end up being a very loving and devoted puppy who just needs a bit of extra love and attention to get used to his new house. Maybe give him a (dirty) piece of your clothing so he can smell you when you leave the room...might give him some comfort |
