I had a yorkie growing up and just recently purchased a very small yorkie. My concern is that my girlfriend has a German Shepphard who is the nicest dog but gets excited and wants to play with the yorkie. In doing so, sometimes he can jump or possibly run her over. Any suggestions on how to have a yorkie and a shepphard in the same house?

Chloe (my tiny Yorkie) isn't allowed on the floor with the bigger dogs for that reason. I hold her & let her play with them, but she's not left alone with them and is never allowed on the floor with them. She stays in my arms or in her bedroom.

thanks for responding..... don't you find it difficult to keep the yorkie off the floor with the other dogs, my shayna wants after the shepphard if she's anywhere in the room.... to play of course

We have 2 yorkies, very small, and this January we decided to get a black labrador puppy. It was very difficult getting the small dogs used to the big dog and vice versa. The big dog thought he was small and the small dogs thought they were big. It takes constant supervision (NEVER EVER leave them alone together) and alot of training on the part of the big dog to make sure the yorkies don't get hurt. One thing that has really helped us is that the yorkies are allowed on the couch and bed but the lab is not. I want the yorkies to have some sort of safe haven from the big dog. If the yorkies get tired of playing or the lab starts playing too rough, the yorkies can just run and jump on the couch. It really helps alot.

It's hard, yea, but I know she's safe.

Everytime she sees the other dogs (especially our Basset Hound who Chloe is in LOVE with for some reason) she goes bananas. Then, I just take her to the couch, call the Basset Hound up on the couch and I hold Chloe while she kisses her like mad lol.
