read this please before you buy a knew puppy
 

my dog duke has liver shunt. we find out yesterday from my vet.duke started 2 weeks a go with with seizure. so my vet run the acids test on him (the test cost about 40 dollars). my vet said we have to see a specialist in san antonio that is 90 miles from us. this is going to be cheap. so i went on the internet and typed in liver shunt and came a cross this on yorkshire terrier national rescue inc. with this in formation. i wished i had that information. i wanred to share this with you guys. please keep my duke in your prayer. we going to san antonio on thursday.

I am so sorry to hear about Duke. I hope that you contacted the breeder you got him from to let her know about the shunt. All my best to Duke and hope everything turns out okay for him.

i called the breeder yesterday. to let him know. but this breeder is into making money. he said it would cost to much to test all his puppies before he sell them

if i would knew about the liver shunt. i would tested duke. the test runs 40 dollars. i am going to take my other dogs to run the test too. make sure nobody else it.

Duke is in my thoughts and prayers for a good prognosis..give him Yorkie kisses..

So sorry to hear about Duke!! If you have any question regarding liver shunt, just ask as we have been through it also. Unfortunately, Miko's was inoperable. The people there are extremely knowledgable and there are a ton of files that you can go through that have a wealth of information. Please join...

A reputable breeder WILL have the bile acid test done on the puppies before selling them. Both my Yorkies came from the same breeder and she had the tests done.
I have been getting this message out to everyone ever since I joined YT.........to PLEASE have the breeder get the bile acid test done first and have proof from the Vet. Also get the breeders Vets. name and number that did the test if the test results are not on the proper Vet. form. This way you can call that Vet. and find out just what has been done, and to how many puppies. I've seen people have the test done on one female and one male puppy, copy the papers for the other puppies. Get the original paper. Buyer beware.

I'm so sorry your having to go thru this. It's an expensive surgery with no guarantees.

i just got of the phone with the specialiest who we going to see on thursday. just to see him cost 90 dollars. he said he is going to run some more test on duke we looking at close to 1000 dollars.

so please guys out there before you buy a puppie. please ask the breeder to test the puppie. the bile acids test is aound 40 dollars

This is true, when I got Milo on Friday, his vet papers were with him and I can see they tested his acids and his poo among other things. I hope everything goes well for you and lil Duke, kissess and prayers to both of you!

I'm so sorry to hear about Duke... My yorkie is 10 months old and has liver shunts, but his are inside the liver and can't be fixed . Tibby just had his operation march 20th this year ...His operation cost us $2600.00.... When the doctor did the ultasound they thought they has located the shunt, but when they got inside it wasn't a liver shunt they saw. The liver biopsy indicated that Tibby has hepatic microvascular dysplasia..This is micoscopic shuntings blood vessels in the liver. (MVD)
Tibby is on hills L/D dog food and takes lactulose twice a day. We contacted the breeder since Tibby has a one year health guarantee. she was very nice about everything, She won't give us our money back, but is going to let us keep Tibby and she's going to give us another dog from 2 different parents and let us choose the sex we wanted. Our new pup should be ready in 2 weeks. We sent her the papers from the vet stating Tibby is inoperable and requires lifetime medical treatments. The breeder talked to her vet about Tibby and she is no longer going to breed those 2 dogs.:animal36
