Yorkie Etiquette Hello YT!! Quick question: What is acceptable behavior when walking your yorkie in your neighborhood? Can I let him walk on the edge of my neighbors yards? Sniff mailboxes? What if, god forbid, he poops?? Sure,I'll take a baggie to clean it up, but is it okay to let him do it? |
Letting him walk on the edge of the yard and sniff mailboxes is perfectly acceptable, IMO. As long as you clean up his poop, it should be ok for him to poop there. After all, it's really tiny poop! :D I take bags with me everywhere and never leave my pup's poop anywhere, even in my own yard. |
What a great question ! I didn't actually think about etiqueitte before - I'm always so worried about big dogs and cars....I guess I need some manners :D ...I agree with the mailbox thing - I think dogs meet thousands of people by sniffing a mailbox ! |
Thanks guys! I just needed some affirmation.... Watch out mailboxes, here we come---- armed with baggies of course:) |
I think Villette is right and you should be ever vigilant about big dogs when we walk these little yorkies (who think they are big dogs). You probably already do this so you asked about etiquette. How sweet you are? Because you are concerned you will be the one who someone will yell at when he does poop!! Lol! That's my luck anyway!! Seriously, I think as long as you clean up after your dog, it is okay. If you have an emptylot or a pak near you where dogs are allowed on a leash then that is preferred but you cannot be expected to carry a wee wee pad  with you on your walks and, after all, Dogs will be dogs!! |
What I did was every time Kali had to poop I took her in the gutter and praised her and that way she learned that she has to poop in the gutter when walking - or in grass if in the garden. Very clever dog - and I score so many points on people noticing how well trained she is :) |
I walk me dogs frequently and I let them sniff around mailboxes ect. They are on leash at all times...just incase. And if they poop (which neither has ever) I take something to clean it up. I however do not allow my dogs to go up to strange dogs even passing by because I don't know those dog and I am always prepared to scoop them up if need be. Chris |
This is a great question! I am always confused by "dog-walking ediquette"! Like when I see someone else walking a dog - do I let my dogs go up to their dogs & sniff around? Some people like to let there dogs socialize & some do not. I never know the appropriate amount of time to let them play with other dogs & if it's rude to pull my dogs away. |
I will always ask before I let my over friendly Mollie say hello to another persons dog, just in case they have a reason for not wanting them to say hello - you never know their dog may be aggresive or ill. I expect the same courtesy from others as Mollie is happy to say hello but Duncan is very aggresive with male dogs and will bite if they insist on bothering him. |
neighborhood Hmmm...I guess I never thought about this. Of course I don't live in the best neighborhood. People walking down my street think it's ok to throw their trash in my yard...so I guess that I don't worry about my puppy sniffing their mailboxes. :D But everybody is right about watching out for other dogs. I really want Syd to get along with other dogs. But she seems to provoke them into meaness. We passed a guy with an older beagle this weekend. Syd starting barking and next thing you know the beagle was trying to break his leash so that he could kill Syd. The owner acted surprised that his dog was acting like that. I think that she just brings out the worst in other dogs. |
That's a great question. I have to agree with everyone else. I am not so much worried about "big dogs" hurting Stewie. He is more likely to hurt them. He attacked a very good natured Doberman the other day. He runs up on people's front stairs if I let his leash long enough :) |
Could Stewie be any cuter???? I have to walk mine on a short leash....BeanSprout trys to attack the neighbor's large "mut"!!! |
BeanSprout - Thanks for the compliment! To answer your question -- yes he could be -- if he were 100% potty trained instead of about 90% :D |
Stewie-- your soo funny!!! Luigi would do the same thing!!! Its soo funny though, when we do walk, he wants to go up to everyone!!! But, I have one neighbor, that when she sees us coming, she makes her kids go up to the garage!!! Sooo weird!! I said to her that he was lovable & sweet, but... Then there are always a group of kids that play in the road and Luig always wants to join in!!! They just love him!! He gets sooo excited to see them!!! And if he has to poopoo, he will hold it til we get back to our yard!!! Soon as we take one step in our yard- he'll poopoo, never anywhere else!! Sooo silly!!!! :p |
Luigi, that is so funny!! Must be a case of bashful bowels. lol |
