I'm a failure I have searched, read, researched, and read some more. Still...when I try to tape Spicey's ears, they just stick straight out- not up. I tried the shaving and attaching the paper via eyelash glue like I read on here but it isn't making them go up either. I am a failure at this. And by the way, the glue and paper deal is MESSY. Don't attempt that unless you REALLY know what you are doing. Poor Spicey. His ears will just have to flop...I know he probably doesn't care...I just wanted him to be like all the other Yorkies. They look so cute with their hair waterfalling off those up ears. I had no idea it would be so difficult. :( |
I don't have a suggestion for you.. but I'm sure someone can help.. try asking one of the breeders on here (sugar's mom off the top of my head) Good Luck |
Don't be hard on yourself. How old is your Spicey? One of my pup's ears was up when we got him, and the other didn't come up until around 15 weeks old. Some just take a while to come up. Keep the ears trimmed really short or shaved until they do come up. |
Don't say that no your not :whatraise ....how old is he? I'm no expert but I'm sure they will go up when they are ready, won't they??? Can anyone else offer advice here? |
You're not a failure...what works for one may not work for another. When we got our first Yorkie his ears flopped and my vet said to massage them to get the circulation going in that area. You just gently massage the ears from the base to the tip while your baby is laying on your lap...it gets the blood going and it relaxes them. Good luck...I hope this works for you. Also, depending on the age of your pup, sometimes they will go up and down during teething so don't get discouraged. |
4 Attachment(s) Yep, how old is Spicy? Cooper's ears were floppy early on, but then after he lost all his baby teeth they stood straight up, they never go down now...maybe he just needs more time. I have attached some pics of Cooper's ears early on and how they are now for you to see how his were. Good luck, I hope they go up if that is what you are hoping for, but I think they are adorable with them down too!! |
Yes, don't be hard on yourself. My last yorkie had flappy ear but when she got older her ear was up!!! We didn't even do anything so just wait and see. Buuut I think flappy ear is cute, remind me of puppy stage!!!! |

What I did do that I thought made a difference was I massaged his ears everyday for several minutes per ear. (Normally while we were watching TV in the evenings, but every time I pet him throughout the day I'd do little massages.) I also kept his the hair on the top 3/4 of his ears shaved. Hope this helps! :) Jess |
He is 19 weeks old. I wish I hadn't tried the eyelash glue. One ear still has the paper attached but the other doesn't. It's pitiful. But even with that on there, the ear is still floppy. He's about 7 lbs right now so maybe that has something to do with it? He's in wonderful health but the breeder told us that due to his size he would be considered "pet quality." He was the largest in the litter and will probably be a 10 pounder. The sire and dam were both under 7lbs but it appears Spicy won't follow suit. This is fine with us because we weren't planning to breed or show and with 3 kids- he's a good size for us. But the more I have read and learned about the "standard" the more I want to do everything I can so he will fit in as many of those standards as possible. Know what I mean? He is absolutely adorable. His coloring will be beautiful and we just love him. I only wish I could help get those big ol ears up. |
almost all of the "above standard" yorkies I have seen have floppy ears.. so this may have something to do with it |
 I had to laugh because it didn't work for us either. They did stand up with the paper on, but not after I took it off. And now there is still a bit of the glue stuck. I do like the ears up with the waterfalling hair too. I love Jeanie the way she is now though. And if they don't go up, I will still love her...........she will be "different".... |
We just used some masking tape for Yoda when his ears were floppy as a baby. It worked great, some may add a small piece of cardboard along with masking tape. Good luck! |
Maybe there is a groomer in the area who could show you a trick or new technique? |
3 Attachment(s) Your not a failure and you can actually get them to stand up still. You have to be dedicated to taping the ears and leaving them taped for 3 days. Then remove the tape and see if they stand, if they still stay down after a day with no tape then re-tape them again for 3 more days. 3 days taped, then 1 day without, then 3 days taped, then 1 day without again. You can do this as long as necessary, since the day with no tape allows his ears to get plenty of air and rest. Here's how I was told to tape my boys ears. Fold them in half long wise like a taco and put your finger in the ear when you wrap the tape around the bottom of the ear. here's a picture of my boy before , during and after. If you have questions feel free to ask... Attachment 109837 Attachment 109838 Attachment 109839 If they dont stay on top of his head, you can tape them together which will kinda look like a tennis net. |
I never shaved either of my dogs ears...or taped them for that matter..when they were done teething...their ears "popped" up and stayed up!! He is still very young and has lots of time for his ears to stand...YOU ARE NOT A FAILURE!! He looks cute no matter what!! Dawn |
Not A Failure I do think if you can keep the weight of his hair off, by shaving the tops it does help, and the ear massage sounds like a good idea. Taping...never was too good with that either, but I did it anyway. Winston's ears have always stood straight up, even as a baby. But my 1st Yorkie, Spencer's didn't. I tried everything...but as he got older, finished teething, they would go up and down, depending on his mood. So it can be done...but I have loved them both, and really wouldn't mind if they never stayed up. Still cute as a button. I think I read on here to use tampons(with the strings cut off) as splints...might be worth a try, I think it sounds like a good idea...:animal36 |
Just let his precious ears fall they look so cute with long ears but I guess I am partial to little floppy ears |
I think you're going to have a big boy indeed -- you'll be lucky if he stops at 10 pounds. But the fact that he exceeds the breed standard doesn't have anything to do with his ears. (I've seen plenty of YTers with "teapots" attest to this.) My first Yorkie was standard in every way, a truly beautiful one in every way -- EXCEPT his ears flopped. Ozzie, however, is 13.5 pounds -- almost twice the most Scruffy ever weighed -- and his ears have almost always been straight up. (And neither of Ozzie's parents weighed more than 7 pounds and both had straight ears. Scruffy's parents were tiny -- 4 and 6 pounds I think -- and their ears were both up, too.) I hope your guy's will stand up for you! But stand or flop, 10 pounds or more -- you've got a keeper. (Assuming that's him in your avatar. What a sweetie.) |
Yes, that is him in my Avatar. He is a cutie! I can try to tape again but tell me again how I get them to stand while I am taping- they are pointing out when I have them taped. I guess I need "ear taping for dummies." :scratchhe |
1 Attachment(s) You're not a failure - I just did your avatar and while looking at his pics I honestly don't think his ears will stand - lots of people have yorkies who's ears don't stand and it's cute...:) :) but shaving them WILL help take the weight off so if you want to keep taping that will help alot.... Shaving is really easy - all you need is a trimmer that looks just like this - 10 bucks at Walgreens - you don't need all the attachments - they were just in the pic I snagged |
4 Attachment(s) also massaging his ears will help...it gets the blood flowing...I have attached some pictures of tootsie when I went thru it...good luck! |
