Is there anything I need to do now?? Ok - yesterday we took Biddy & Tucker to a wooded area that has trails that you can walk. They loved it! We live in the city so they don't get to be at one with nature very often. Anyway, later that day I noticed a "spider" crawling across the couch. I didn't tell my boyfriend because he's petrified of bugs. A little while later my boyfriend was pointing at me and screaming. Another of what I thought was a spider was crawlingup my arm. I said - oh it's a spider, i found one earlier too. He said - it's not a spider, it's a tick! Great. So I checked Biddy & Tuck over from head to toe (and gave them baths). Tucker had a tick in his ear. We suffocated it with olive oil and ulled it out with tweezers, but is there anything else that I should do now? I keep checking them over & I haven't seen any other ticks. Sorry - I'm a city gal & didn't even know what a tick was!! |
I would call your vet.......We live in CT where Lyme disease started so we got Bella the Lyme Vac.....we have many friends with dogs that got Lyme disease so I didn't want to take a chance. Maybe search some sites for Lyme Disease for dogs |
Just check them over again. It takes a while for them to get imbeded so by the sounds of it you probably found them all. There's really not much you could do to keep them off, but if you're going to walk them through that area again and make a habit of it, then I would get them a lymes shot and maybe put something like Frontline on them, that way it will hopefully keep them biting. There are certain areas that are full of ticks, more than others. We stopped at a rest area when traveling one time, and I had white sweat pants on and I noticed a tick, then another :eek: , I quickly checked my yorkie and he had about 5 that were on his back :eek: I got them all off and then did a complete search, didn't find any more. tick erg! You are supposed to take the tick into your vet to be tested for Lyme disease. I would get both of your babies on Frontline Plus right away...b/c it protects from fleas and ticks. I would also spray your carpets and furnature (I room at a time with Raid Flea and Tick). Don't let the babies back in the room until it is dry and the smell is gone. |
It is totally possible you got the ticks on you just from being out in the wooded area......not just coming off the dogs.... I have more problems with ME getting ticks than the dogs. Last year I had ZERO ticks found on the dogs...but had 3 on ME!!!!! But we are outside alot and we have lots of trees and such. Many ticks just fall from the trees and land on 'whatever' is around. They can hide easily on a dog....but will crawl on a human also. I even asked the vet to recommend a tick collar for people!!! I agree with the advise given...get the pups on some kind of preventive med and just be careful and look for ticks on yourself after being out in wooded areas..... |
I spoke to my vet & she said not to worry at this point. The head was not embedded and we removed the tick & are positive there are no more. I am going to get them both on frontline plus. Thank you all for the advice - I am a total city girl & freaked at the thought of ticks!!! |
