Do vets always shave the hair for a spay? Xena was spayed today - and it's been traumatic for me (she's fine, but it's still traumatic). We just brought her home 1/2 hour ago so she's still sedated, but I saw that they shaved a good amount of hair on her belly and up her sides. Is that normal? I thought they would shave where the incision was but now her hair it two completely different lengths and it's very noticeable. She has never had her hair trimmed so it had some good length to it. Has this been the case with anyone else? I'm thinking I'll have to cut the rest of her hair to match or will it start to blend? I know it will grow out, but after reading a lot of posts it sounds like it could take months. |
they just shaved cocos belly and one of her legs |
They never shaved my girls that much. |

I was afraid of that. I thought about asking before hand about the shaving, but I was so nervous I forgot. Oh well, I guess it will grow back eventually. Thanks! |
All they shaved on Venus was her tummy. |
they shaved very little of Monday's tummy and one leg (where the anesthesia was inserted?) .. |
When she is feeling better I will post pictures - maybe I am overreacting. Before her hair was straight across on the bottom, now she looks like a greyhound (that's probably not accurate but it's what comes to mind). And to top it off, my bottle of Minksheen arrived today but I can't bathe her for 10 days. I have been holding off on taking her to a groomer because of all the "they cut all my dogs hair off" stories - and the now the vet did it anyway. I know it's not a big deal compared to other problems - but it is bothering me. |
Usually w/ any surgery (dogs and humans) the area of incision is shaved, and some doctors probably do shave more than others, but it'll grow back. Nothing to worry about :) |

I'm glad I read this because Sadie is being spayed in two weeks - I'll be sure to tell the vet to shave as little as possible - as I'm trying to let her hair grow!! Thanks for the heads up!! |
Yes Pippa was shaved for her spay and it was quite far up too. |

That's right. It's to prevent infection. If some of the hairs (even peach fuzz that everyone has EVERYwhere on their body) get inside the incision, it's a nasty mess! |
Doctors/nurses shave all persons having surgery...same sanitary reasons apply to dogs. |
Cali had her spay done while in heat because of a possible intestinal blockage and needing a liver biopsy. The surgeon tld me that the incision would be big to limit the bleeding??. Then after surgery she started to hemmorage so they wrapped a bandage around her whole mid section. They obviously just cut the bandage off as her sides were much shorter and all chopped up, I just gradually trimmed her up until she evened out. |
