How to stop him from running out the door? He has got to where he wants outside all the time when it is pretty. He is allowed in the fienced in back yard but that is not good enough, he wants to run out the front door. There are a few dogs around here, one big bull dog across the road that is tied but he has already killed a couple dogs that have got too close. It scares me to death because Dusty wants to go over there and tell the bull dog how big he thinks he is. there is no way to block the door off and just so happens it is the one everyone uses. What can I do? |
Can you put a baby gate up? What we did was make sure our dogs were secure before anyone opened the door for guests by holding them, putting their leash or placing them in their x-pen. |
You need to put a barrier between him and the front door. Then yhou need to teach him to stay back. I did this by using my foot to push them back, saying STAY. Now all I need to do is say STAY. |
Simon was the same way so my trainer suggested using a piece of blue tape and putting his blanket or bed behind the blue tape. I worked and worked but Simon is at the point now where he won't cross that blue line until I tell him it's okay. I used a ton of rewards and pointed at the blue line and said no repeatedly. When he didn't cross it he got a reward (treat). It worked for us but it did take some time. Just a suggestion :) |

Bolting I used to dread opening the front door because they'd bolt. I trained them the following way: I say a sharp "shh" sound and quickly tap my dogs on their back leg. This distracted them from focusing on bolting. I kept setting up the scenario until they caught on, usually about 4 tries. Now they wait for permission.:D |
Gordon is learning to sit and stay in puppy class. Gordon tries to get out the kitchen door whenever it is open..so before I open the door , I put him in a sit and then tell him stay. He use to dart out the door as soon as it was open. I'm now working with him for a longer stay. I'm also working with him that he can't go out the door unless I go first. I don't release him from stay until I step out the door first. It is scary when they run out the door, especially if they don't have the command " Come" down pat. We are also working on that command... I was using a barrier , but because the kitchen door is constantly used by family members , it was a pain to deal with. All family members are now working with the sit and stay with him at the door. So far it is working. I hope you find something that works for him. |
Great ideas I have tried to use the foot and stay command and I have told everyone what to say but everyone uses something else like no or loud noises. It is driving me crasy because no one in the house will do what I tell them. I think I will send my husband and kids away for a couple of weeks and maybe can make some progress. I like the tape thing, something they can see. Keep them coming I am learning alot. |
A big firm NO everytime he starts heading towards the door. It takes a while, but my guys all know to stay away from the door unless I tell them in a friendly voice to go outside. I can't worry that when I am walking in with my arms full of groceries that they are waiting to dart outside. |
