I just came back from the Vet Surgeon. and I found out that Lilo has 2nd grade of LP in her right hind leg.:( The surgery will be done propably around 20th of may, BC i need to be in NY on 15-17 for training, and I can't leave her alone for this long. The Vet quoted me for $1500 to $2000 for one knee to be repaired, but if she will need second one done at this same time, it will cost only $500 more. I can't really afford it right now, so I'm also looking into veterinary surgeons college, to see if the students won't do it for cheaper. But if I don't find any other option in a month , than I'll just have to do it with my current surgeon. Do you guys think that I should also ask my breeder for some money back? I think that LP is hereditary, and Lilo is still only 9 mo. old. I don't know if she will help me with any vet bills, but I'll better check with her. |

If it were me, I would most definitely contact the breeder and see what he/she is willing to do. As far as the price, I don't think it's out of line. It's actually another $1000 more up this way. Don't get me wrong...it's alot of money. As far as looking for students to do the surgery..I wouldn't. It can be complicated and as I understand it, alot of the surgery is up to the discretion and opinion of the surgeon. I prefer one with years and tons of other surgeries under his belt. |
Definitely let your breeder know and she what might be offered. Check your contract - many only offer help if it is a life-threatening condition. I also though that grades 3 & 4 were the ones that warrranted surgery - that grade 2 was more a wait and see?? |
knee Is she limping? I would wait if it is a grade 2 and she is not limping alot...knees can improve or get worse. |
Oh No :( I am in the same boat as you. Roxy and TJ both have LP in both rear legs. They are from the same breeder (same father - different mother). See this post, about 'my breeder' feeling no compasion, no care or no responsibility regarding LP http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=54637 In NY - I paid $3000 for Roxy to have both legs repaired at the same time. One leg didn't stablize and the 2nd survery cost another $600. And then the consult fees, additional x-rays, etc. proably cost another $400. So her grand total was $4000. I didn't think that with grade 2 surgery was necessary... even with grade 3 or 4 it all depends on whether they are in pain or limping. :confused: Has Lilo shown signs of being in pain or limping? Hope all works out for the best. :) |
Daisy has Grade 3 in both of her knees. The vet said if she's not showing any signs of it bothering her then dont worry about it. He said some dogs needs surgery while some dont. Hopefully Daisy doesnt. Good Luck! |

I tend to disagree that 'surgery is only needed if limping - even in Grade 3 and 4'. I was told that once the cartiledge is worn away from constant luxation, that can't be replaced. Which just makes matters worse down the line when they are older. This could cause anything from arthritis to not being able to walk with the leg. I just would not take the chance. Fix it early, not later. Even if they are not limping and they do have LP, damage is being done, you can't go and fix it to be all good once you get to a certain point. |
