re:treating yard for ticks and fleas
 

how long do you usually wait before letting your puppy out in the yard after applying one of these products??? or do you have to wait at all??:confused: we are going to use the granular material - not the spray. i have read the info and it says it is only harmful if absorbed through the skin.

Since I have show dogs and not to say they're any more important than anyone elses....it just requires a little more care since one day they will be used for stud and breeding...I keep them completely off for 24 hours....gives it enough time to absorb into the earth and plant matter and dry.

exactly what i decided to do after reading this info Mardelin! since it does have to be wet after applying i will keep romeo off it for 24 hours to be on the safe side.

I am the organic flea control lady!!! I'm sure some of you are thinking, "oh no! not that crazy organic flea lady again!!! :D I would NEVER put any chemicals on my yard! Now, I don?t know if this works for ticks or not ? still, even if it doesn?t, I would only use a natural product for ticks and I wouldn?t ever use chemicals on my yard.

Beneficial nematodes are the answer to flea control in your yard. Read more about them here http://www.marchbiological.com/L/ben...nematodes.html They are microscopic organisms that feed on a variety of soil insects and they will keep fleas, etc. out of your yard.

Of course, that does not mean that your baby won't get a flea when they go on a walk or that a flea might crawl over into your yard from the neighbors yard. But that can be controled by bathing your babies in Dawn dishwashing soap or some other non-toxic method.

The nematodes will also keep the fire ants out of your yard and that is a great benefit to those of us who live in the south. I have used the nematodes for 6-7 years and have not had a flea problem in all that time. I have outdoor dogs living on both sides of my yard too. The nematodes work great!

You can usually get them at any organic gardening store. They can also be ordered, but they must be kept cool or they will die, so if you order them, be sure the supplier plans to cool ship them. Also, follow the directions EXACTLY for putting them on the yard. You do have to water your yard in the summer when it is very dry, enough so that the nematodes do not dry up and die - maybe once a week or so, if it is not raining.

Also, I put diatamaceous earth around the perimeter of my yard to keep the fleas from crawling into my yard. It works great, but it must be reapplied after a heavy rain. I am kind of rural and never treat my yard or land. Only the pets themselves with Frontline. Last summer we never had one bug on any of the zoo. Must be working for us.

I totally agree with Rowdy'sMom. I would never put any chemical on my lawn. Ants also eat the fleas. Keeping the yard cut and watered regularly will help also. Even when I walk the dogs, they are never allowed in anyones lawn for a couple of reasons.....first I don't want them to potty in someones yard, and next I don't know what they have put on their grass.

One of the breeders on here last summer recommended Bug B Gone Extreme from Lowe's. i haven't tried it yet but will soon. I live on a farm where the entire back is converted intoa training pen for my husbands beagles. He treats it regularily but it is full of ticks. My yeard is about an acre fenced off and the back part backs up to the training pen. I am for sure treating my yard. right now tho, it is twenty degrees so I will wait awhile.

If you live on a farm or have land in the country,
the best solution we have found is Guinea Fowl.
They are great and their primary diet is fleas and
ticks. We have several of them and never have
any flea or tick problems. We generally keep about
6-8 birds per acre. We don't have to feed them
and they take care of themselves. :D

we DO NOT have fleas. it is the TICKS that i am worried about! we were out in the yard last week and one was on his coat!:eek: thank goodness i spotted it before it could attach itself to him. and Guinea Fowl would not work for us no matter how good they may do the job! my husband would freak out!;) i am going to use the ortho product we bought last week - bug b gone max.
