Advice needed I live in a building that has no pets policy but management agreed to let me rent an apartment because Royce is small and I always carry him in his bag in the lobby area and the elevators ( im very discreet about it ) . Recently a guy bought a chiwawa and he walks around in the lobby etc showing off his dog as a result all the tenants in the building received a letter warning them that if you have a dog you have 1 week to rehome the pet or further actions will be taken . ... just last week management sent me a letter to renew my lease and I agreed and signed ( the manager didnt mention anything about Royce ) . what should I do ? Of course i will never ever get rid of royce !!!!! Should I wait and see what are the further actions they are talking about or start looking for another apartment ? |
If the management agreed, maybe you can talk to them again about what they agreed to. Point out that you don't parade yours around and he is in a carrier whenever you leave your apartment. Hope it works out for you. :) |

I would also talk to them again. I hope it works out and the agreement is still in standing. |
Talk to management! If you have an agreement with them I would ask that it be put in writing. Agree to keep your little one in a bag when transporting and any other conditions agreed upon previously. Too bad the other tenant has to spoil it. Best of luck to you and Royce!! |
On my lease it's clearly written " no cats, no dogs. I signed this lease . However the lease manager of the building told me that for him he is not aware that I have a dog but if problems happen for example neighbors complain...then im the one who is responsible. Eventually a couple of months ago 2 neighbors complained because Royce would cry whenever I leave the apartment for work and on these two occasions I convinced the manager that It;s only temporary and Royce will stop this behavior and the manager was very nice and told me not to worry about it ...this time it's a different matter another guy has a dog and is showing it off so I guess they will ask us both either to get rid of our pets or to leave ..... |

this guy is completely stupid for walking around in the common areas with his dog's head poking out of his jacket . I will insist that since the day i moved in i was very discreet I always put royce in his bag when i leave the apartment and take him out once im ouside and i do the same thing when i come back to the building ...he doesn't bark and all my neigbors just love him ...if management want to go to the rental board and complain i will raise the point that royce does not bother anyone and he is always in his bag, plus there are cats everywhere in the building... |
You need to check the laws there........I know in NY there's a 3 months law.......if you haven't been notified within 3 months of them knowing you have a pet......then it STAYS!!! nothing they can do.....and I know that for a fact.......I had two dogs.....and all of a sudden after about 4 years they decided they didn't want the dogs.....it was TOO LATE!!! |
I'm thinking the letter was just sent out to everyone, and if your on the mailing list, that's why you got a letter too. Were always getting letters from our association about where to keep stuff like dirtbikes, motorcycles, boats, etc..and about picking up after your dog. My boyfriend always thinks the letter is directed at us, and I have to explain "no, it's just to everyone because some people aren't doing what their supposed to". Maybe just doublecheck w/ your manager to be safe though. I hope all goes well! |
I wouldn't do anything because management already knows about your pup. Just be patient and keep being discreet. |
management agreed to let me rent an apartment because Royce is small That is your agreement with management and if you are nervous, speak to the management again. Do you have it in writing? |
I would talk to the management. Tell them you know that the other tenants are upset about the Chi and ask if there has been any problems or complaints about your little guy. If not and things are still ok, MAKE SURE you get an addendum to you lease. You NEED it in writing. That way, if this happens again, you are covered. In the meantime, I would just be on the lookout for a pet friendly place. Since you haven't talked to management, you don't know how the convo is going to go, or what is going to happen. Now that there are tenants complaining about pets (even though it isn't yours) they might come down hard on everyone. Good Luck!! |
I would talk to your apartment manager. Its too bad that guy had to go and ruin that. That is real smart parading a dog around in an apartment building where no pets are allowed |
Yeah, you shouldn't assume that the agreement is still okay. I would talk to management again, but also remember that you are taking a risk by staying there. If it were me, I'd look for another place, but I know that moving can be hard. I would just feel more comfortable staying somewhere i knew i could keep my dog 'legally.' |
the tenants are not complaining . a guy about a month ago saw me in the elevator and noticed Royce in his bag. he asked me if management is aware that i have a dog i said no and also said that im very discreet all the time so he said "me i want to buy a boxer and i asked them and they said no to me " this same guy bought a chi and instead of being discreet he is showing it off ...so management got upset that a second person got a dog and decided to send a notice to all tenants asking them to rehome their dog within 1 week . the manager will never give me a written agreement,it;s a verbal agreement between us if royce does not cause problems then you can keep him ...it's a very delicate situation they cant order the chi guy to get rid of his pet or leave his apartment and do nothing about me ... i guess i will wait to see what are their further actions and go all the way to the rental board if they send me a notice to leave my apartment ....I have arguments : i have a proof that management is aware of the dog and if they sent me a letter to renew my lease for me it means that they consent to me having a dog, second my dog does not bother anyone and he is always in his bag ... |
Oh gosh, what a tough situation!! I'm praying that this all settles down...Are you going to look for another place? |

If if they decide to go all the way to get me evicted from my apartment I will contest by sending a letter to the rental board ....then there will be a hearing in front of the judge all this procedure can take up to a year if not more and I'm planning to leave montreal and go to europe by end of september anyway so i guess I wont worry too much about it ... |

Ah, I see. I always thought that if you signed a written lease that says no pets allowed, then that is what stands up in court moreso than a verbal agreement. I guess talking to mgtmnt again is the way to go at this point. Anyway, good luck and I hope everything works out in the end. :) |
Sounds to me that this might be a mute point. Especially if you're moving. Good luck. |
This sounds like a don't ask, don't tell situation. If you push the issue, they will have no choice but to enforce the lease. I would wait and see how things turn out at this point. Keep being very discreet. Next time your lease comes up; you'll need to speak to them about making an exception for Royce, or you'd have to move to a place more dog friendly. . I already renewed my lease last week for a year ....the manager didnt mention Royce and I kept quiet as well ...What it tells me is that if they offered to renew my lease knowing that I have a dog it means that they agree toit otherwise they wont renew my lease ! |
