what happens if they eat chocolate?
 

I know chocolate is very dangerous for dogs. My 6 year old cocker can sniff out chocolate a mile away. She has always had a stomach of steel and I can't even tell you how much chocolate she has gotten into...among other things. Call me a bad mom if you want but I was in the bathroom and came out and Daisy had gotten into my daughters easter basket and ate several pieces of chocolate. The basket was on a table but she got it anyway. Like I said, it has never phased her but I know the long term affects are as bad if not worse than the immediate effects. But what are the long term effects? Is it their kidneys that it affects? I am worried becase she did this yesterday afternoon and this morning she was throwing up a little bit of yellow vile. I'm worried and have a call into the vet. she is acting normal but I am just worried that she has hit the point where it is going to start hurting her. I know you will probably say "you need to be more careful and keep the chocolate put away" but literally, it is just so hard to keep it put up every single second. all it takes is walking away for a MINUTE and she has it. she is so bad about that. She has never been destructive or bad about anything else, but candy is her weakness. she can't control herself :animal36

so...can you guys give me some insight as to what chocolate really does to them?

I'm not sure, but had a schnauzer who could sniff out chocolate from a mile away...never seemed to cause him any problems (although we tried to avoid it)

Ginger got a chocolate coin once and I freaked. I called the vet. If I understood them correctly, its not so much long term effects, but you never know when it's going to be too much. And, if I understand correctly, too much is deadly almost immediately??? They weren't too concerned about the chocolate coin (she did get an upset stomach though), but explained that an entire candy bar for a dog her size could be fatal...

YT's who know more, please feel free to correct me if I've got it all wrong.

I wouldn't be too concerned, sounds like your little one is going to be fine. I know I've seen several paniced "he/she ate chocolate" posts since I've been on YT and can't remember a single one that turned out bad.

I used to have a big dog growing up and we never knew dogs were not supposed to have chocolate. Or milk. I'd give her a piece of chocolate now and then, or mix her dry kibble with milk to make it more enticing :eek: LOL. Or give her bones. She did have a stomach of steel and died at a really old age... NOW I know better and Yorkies are so small, seems anything bigger than a pea might be harmful for them...

Henry Ate The Chocolate Off 2 Milk Duds Last Week, Scared Me To Death. That Is A Small Amount Of Milk Chocolate. He Did Not Even Vomit,the Vet Did Not Return My Call Until The Next Day.
I Don't Know What To Tell You. I've Only Had Henry For A Few Weeks, But I Did Take Him To The Vet The Next Day, Just To Be Safe

i'm sorry, it was my cocker that ate it. i am sure that it would effect maggie much quicker since she is so much smaller so I guess that is one reason I am asking...just want to make sure I know what to look out for if she or daisy ever get ahold of some and show any symptoms.

maggie has never gotten in any candy. thankfully. but daisy has always been sneaky when it comes to stuff like that. and she has had plenty of chocolate :) she seems to tolerate it very well. she never has weird bm's or ANYTHING. and like I said, this morning she had a little vile but she hasn't acted weird or gotten sick again at all.
