The need to know concerning a yorkie?
 

Hello all!! I need LOTS of poiners, Im going to get a yorkie in a few weeks. Ive been thinking about one for about 6 months or so, and I have decided that I really want one. I had originally wanted to get a german shepard but also at the same time I wanted to have a baby. :) I already have a two year old daughter,and Im half bald :rolleyes: so the I thought I havent had a dog since my boxer Fat Boy died (R.I.P) :littleang So why not get a puppy to baby.:p I found this site on accident, began reading and just feel in love with yorkies. I read from alot of people saying that yorkies are just like babies, I thought perfect!! :thumbup: I just recently became a member since I was still debating on a german shepard. But then I thought you cant dress a German Shepard or carry him around, or have him sit comfortably in my lap. And Ive always had big dogs so this time Im gonna get a small one, a beautiful yorkie!! Anyways as to the point of this thread. I just wanted to know about the health risks, signs to look out for and just the things that are a definate need to know when concerning a yorkie. I just want to make sure I am fully prepared for a tiny little pup!! :D Sorry Its So Long :p

Welcome to Yorkie Talk! You sure came to the right place for all your questions and concerns. I used have german shepherds growing up. I love them too.

There is a lot of info on here in past threads and in the FAQ section of this forum. You should start there and just read as much as you can and then you will develop other specific questions that you can ask in threads. You can also do a search of the all the previous posts by putting in any subject you can think of.

With a 2 year old you will probably want a yorkie on the larger size so you will not have to worry so much about an accidental injury to the dog. Your human baby would never intentionally hurt your fur baby but accidents happen and most breeders won't sell a little tiny yorkie to someone with a small child.

There is a lot to consider and I commend you for doing it ahead of time instead of after the fact.

Thanx for the hint on the faq section. I understand the risks of having such a small puppy and a small child. Ive already found a breeder near me that sells her pups to people with small childeren. He will be treated like my second child. But if I know myself and I do, that puppy will be in my arms for as long as he will allow me to hold him. And my daughter will not be allowed to hold him and will only play with him under strict supervision for I do not want anything to happen to my teeny tiny baby pup.(that is when I get one). Well thanx for pointing me in the right direction!!

Welcome to Yorkie Talk!! So glad you found this site -- it's a great place to learn about Yorkies and everyone is so, so helpful and friendly!

I wouldn't discourage your 2 year old from playing with the pup, especially if it's on the larger size. Yes, you should be careful but not overly vigilant... Yorkies can take care of themselves!!

I grew up around Yorkies and we owned 2 (traditional sized Yorkies - one was 4.5 pounds, one was 6). My uncle (R.I.P.) bred and showed them . I think it's very important to introduce them to kids when they're really young, It'll make all the difference as the dogs grow up.

Also, remember that Yorkies are terriers. Terriers LOVE to play and they are pretty hearty little folk! I think that we get so wrapped up in their size that we forget that these little babies can hang with the best of them!!! A healthy Yorkie can outrun you and me both and they're definitely not as fragile as we think!

Irmi- Your post reminds me of what the commentator said of Yorkies during the Westminster this year.... "They may be in the Toy Group, but they are still terriers!" That quality is one of the most endearing things about this breed to me... they are small, but no one told them that! :D

Irmi, you might be getting a small dog you can carry around but he'll THINK he is a German Shepard.. ;) lol

I do hope you will consider everything you read on a tinies and children.I myself am not a believer in small yorkies and small children. I have a 2 lb yorkie and a 8 lb yorkie. I wouldn't let a 2 yr old play with my little one but the larger yorkie LOVES kids. I would think that would be such a much safer and better choice. You can still dress up a 7-8 lb yorkie:)
