I am about to loose my mind!!!!!!!!!!! Please help! Mika is 3 months old and everytime that I crate her she poops and pee in her crate. SHe pees EVERYWHERE except in the site where she needs to go!! I do not remember when I DID NOT scold her. SHe makes me extremely angry!!!!!!! Please any suggestions?>>>???? Thanks. Eri |
How big is the crate you have her in? Make sure that it is just big enough for her to turn around in. If it is too big, she can go potty in one spot and sleep in another. Good luck- I know how difficult and frustrating it is!! |
i agree with magneticgal. Also where did you get your puppy from, a breeder or petstore? sometimes when they are from petstores they are so used to peeing and pooping in their cage that it doesn't phase them at all. i know its hard and frustrating. what kind of food and potty schedule do you have your puppy on? |
I put a pee pad at one end and Lily's bedding at the other so that she dose not have to wait to go.Maybe you could try that? |
hey ladies to respond to your questions: I got her from a breeder and I have the space in the crate in the way that she has enough space to turn around. SHe is SOOO small that the space is minimal. THank you |
My puppy would pee in her crate every night but when she turned about 7 months old she stopped. Guess she wasnt able to hold it all night. But now she can. |
My Gordon did the same thing for about a week when I first got him. Then I put him on a feeding and potty schedule. His last feeding at night is 6:30 PM.....I take him out to potty afterwards. If he doesn't potty then, I take him out every 30 minutes till he does. I also walk him before I put him in his kennel at night. It seems to tire him out and he sleeps all night. I get up at 5:30 AM and we hurry and take him out. He hasn't done anything at night in his kennel since I started this......and he really enjoys his nightly walk.....even if it is only around the yard. |
i had the same problem with my italian greyhound. no matter how small the space was, it was like he would potty and play in it. like he liked it or something. it was so incredibly frustrating. the only thing that seemed to help is walking him regularly. he was the first small breed dog that i ever had and i just didn't realize how often he needed to go potty. they are so tiny, they just can't hold it long. we have bells on the back door so maggie can let us know when she needs to go out and sometimes it seems like she is ringing the bell every 5 minutes. but when they have to go, they have to go. and if they are so tiny, they just can't hold it the way bigger doggies can. i dont know your history with dogs or anything like that, i am just saying maybe you could try walking her a couple of times a day. it will help to tire her out a bit, give her a way to let out some energy and when they go walking around, they tend to eliminate more and get more out than a quick trip outside might do. i really hope this gets better for you. I know how hard and frustrating it is. I didn't know how I would survive. I dealt with it for 10 months and then starting walking him a lot. 10 months!! it was horrible. a total nightmare. i will pray that this passes and gets better for you quickly. |
You are not alone in your frustration - potty training dogs is one of the most frustrating times for dog and owner. Just remember that she is a baby and with time and patience she will finally get it. I have double trouble - my girls are 12 weeks old and I have them in a kennel that is part of an x-pen. I allow the girls a larger play area with a piddle pad on one end. During the day they just run to the pad and do their business. I only take them out to play on the kitchen floor when I can watch them constantly! If they act as if they are going to piddle I encourage them to go back into the x-pen and to their pad. At night I make the x-pen only big enough so they step out of their crate to the pad. I've been doing this for 2 weeks now and I can honestly say we are about 85% trained. When there are accidents I just clean them up with no fuss - I put them in their kennel and clean it up. I don't say a word to them - I don't draw attention to what I'm doing. When they do go to the pad I praise and tell them what smart, wonderful girls they are. They love that. Just remember it takes time - few dogs get it quickly. Patience, perserverence and persistance. Good luck!! |

I don't think my pup at three months could hold her pee pee/poopy and didn't sleep with me for months. She was kept in the kitchen, gated with her crate open during the night. Same during the day until she figured out how to use her paper. The paper gradually turned into letting me know she wanted to go outside. I was the one who was trained first and then she caught on. Your baby is very young and probably confused about exactly what to do. My advice would be to be very patient, clean up her pee & poopy, and it won't be long until she can hold it longer and recognizes the paper or pad as her potty station. Good luck |

Two thoughts....She is in the crate too long and HAS to go, obviously she has no place to go but in the crate (no, dogs generally do not like to mess their den). I've done housetraining two different ways on two seperate dogs..Remember, nothing is written in stone, and all dogs react differently and have different time frames..3months is very young to be housetrained or hold it very long, especially if she is tiny. #1. When I crate trained one of my Yorkies who was 3lbs. I set my alarm clock and got up in the middle of the night to take her outside (or in your case if you are using a peepad. Don't make a big deal, just take her out of the crate and set her on the grass or pad or whatever, give her time to see if she has to pee/poo. Then with no fanfare put her back in the crate and go back to bed. Next, if you are home on weekends try to work with the whole crate thing. Put her in there after play time and set a timeer for 1hr and take her out to go, continue doing this throughout the day. Maybe rent yourself some movies and make a day of it! #2. My next Yorkie, I did something unconventional, but it worked. He was so tiny so I decided I would try the litter box training, only the actual litter didnt work (He didn't want to step on it or he ate it) so I got a small cat box and shaved down the one side so he could step into it. The I cut the peepad to fit into the box. I bought a little larger kennel to where I could fit the littlerbox in the back of the kennel. For me, it worked like a charm, he would do his business in the litterbox. I did not get up in the middle of the night, this also helped when I was at work and he didn't have to hold it. Eventually, I started giving him run of the kitchen with the litterbox and he used it faithfully 99% of the time. Sometimes the poo would hit the outside of the box, but I think thats because most dogs move around when they want to poo, but generally he hit the mark. After about 7months we went on Vacation and I took the litterbox with. On Vac. the dogs could be outside alot (the door was open so they could run in/out). Suddenly he would not touch that litterbox. When we got home, I tried to get him to use his box and he would just jump out of it and from then on he would only go outside with the other dogs to do his stuff. It was like he said..Done with the box. He has only had 2 accidents in my house over the past year and those were my fault. These are just suggestions that did work for me. Sometimes you have to be creative and find what works for both of you. If you have a tiny yorkie and he/she is fully housetrained consider it lucky, they are difficult little buggers to train, but with persistance, patience it can be done. You also have to make sacrifices (ie: getting up in the middle of the night, trying to get home at lunch time etc). Remember, she isn't messing in the house to peeve you off, she is like a young toddler trying to learn to use the potty. Just like human babies some catch on immediately, some seem to take forever..then one day....wella..:) |
  Great suggestions!!!  |
maybe you could get her a female doggie diaper to wear while inside the house |
thank you all for your suggestions today Mika went to potty on the bathroom on the newspaper and I was so proud of her. I gave her treats and hugged her and made a party for her LOL> I think that slowly she will get it. Thank you all for the suggestions. Eri |
Hooray for Mika and Mommy. |
tricksie is 7 months old and finally quit going at night. You have a lot of good advice but one of the best is to NOT scold when she goes, but really praise her and give her a treat when she goes on the pee pads or outside. Tricksie is trained to the pads now. I posted about reply about sleeping with pets yesterday, last night I let her sleep with us and she stayed by me in one spot all night and jumped out of bed this morning and went to her pad. |
maybe her little bladder is real small yet. You don't suppose she has a bladder infection or something like that do you? |
I've never had good luck using crate training myself - seems like none of my dogs minded peeing and pooping in their beds - LOL! I used an exercise pen with Sadie with Simple Solutions training pads. I put her bed, food, water, 2 pads, and a couple of toys in there, and she slept in the pen until she wasn't having very many accidents. Now she sleeps in bed with me. When I was home, I left the door to pen open and she would run in there to do her business. This setup worked really well with her and she was about 90% toilet trained by 5-6 months (which I thought was great given the reputation Yorkies have for being hard to train). She's 10 months old now and has occasional "mistakes" but for the most part she is totally potty trained. You just need to find a system that works for you. Hang in there!! :p |
[QUOTE]we have bells on the back door so maggie can let us know when she needs to go out and sometimes it seems like she is ringing the bell every 5 minutes. but when they have to go, they have to go. [QUOTE] What a great idea!!! How did you train her to use the bell? Spicy is just starting to go sit at the back door when he needs out but if we don't notice soon enough, he'll go there. |
Just be patient and stay consistant with it. She is still very young at 3 months to fully understand the concept of going outside to potty. Our newest addition...Lexi...is 6 months old and is just now really getting the hang of things. I remember that Trixie was about 10 months old before I could truly say she was house broken. |
