Yorkietalkers! I have a dilemma! Hi Yorkietalkers!!!!! I haven't started many thread lately, but this time I have a big dilemma. Bengi is going to be 1 year old on the 17th of this month. He's been staying in the kitchen while hubby and I are off to work. Usually, if we leave the house for a short period of time, like for running errands, he gets free run of the house. Those times, he has always behaved and went potty where he is supposed to and didn't touch anything he's not supposed to. Now, hubby is telling me he wants to grant him free run of the house all the time. I know I can trust Bengi, but sometimes I get scared thinking that something could happen to him. I know the kitchen is a small place so he is better protected. But hubby does not want him to stay there anymore because Bengi is a little afraid of the noise the refrigerator makes. We are gone from 6:30 to 5 everyday, that's a long time, but a least 3 times a week if not more, my mom picks him up and takes him to her house around 2 PM or earlier. So, he's not alone all day every day, but mostly the mornings. What would you do? would you let him run free around the house?... or sleep free, cause I know he sleeps most of the time anyway... Please tell me what you think! |
Mine got free run of the house around a year old too. You can try it and see how he does |
He will be fine, my 4 have run of the house, just make sure no electrical cords are where he can chew on them, but don't worry he will be fine....:D He is a big boy now:p |
Since you are concerned why not grant him an addtional room and when that goes well add another room and then free run? Too much at first may be overwhelming -but by enlarging the space slowly may less stressful to him. OR Try giving him free run during the weekends for longer than 15 -20 mins. See how he does. If there are no problems - go for it!! Good luck!! |

Thank you guys for your advise. Today we gave Bengi free run of the house. Let's see how he does... I'm so nervous!!!!! Simplyyorkies said to grant a new room at a time, which was a great idea, but I could't do it because of the set up of my apartment. If I let him out of the kitchen, he is getting the whole living room, dining room and hall; I can't separate those spaces. But my apartment is not big anyway. I can't wait to get home and check on him! I'm gonna make sure my mom picks him up today. wow, my baby is a big boy now!!!!!!! |

I to am very nervous and mine stay in a expen, I'm just so paranoid something may happen. My hubby is home 3 days a week cause he works 12 hour shifts, so there not alone all week, thank god! Let me know how it goes!! |
I'm sure he's doing great!! I was nervous at the beginning as well, thinking he might fall off something or chew something he's not supposed to (he's not even a climber  ). Actually, he gets into more mischief when we're home, he hasn't destroyed anything while we're away and has been pretty good with the pee pad. It's been a couple months now. |
My zoo only gets free run of the house when I am home. It seems if by accident they get free run when I am not home, they do something naughty or go to the bathroom where they shouldn't. My Bijou's favorite is to go into my bathroom and shred the toilet paper. I have a bigger kitchen area and I assume they must sleep alot if I do have to leave. |
I know how you feel. Buddy has been free since around 1year old. We had a couple of incidents regarding chewing things he should'nt have but that stopped and he has had free run for two years now. He sleeps all day. Good luck, give it a little time and things will be ok. I am also gone all day from 8:00am until 5:30pm. |
