Riley was SUCH a bad boy this morning!! I took him with me to go pick up my prescription at my Dr's office. Well we got there and of course I couldnt bring him in. So I ran in to pick it up, was gone for literally less than 5 minutes. Came back to my car and sat down on a nice fresh pile of doggy doo. I was soo disgusted! I have NEVER hit/struck my baby but I was so angry that I (lightly)slapped him on the butt and put him in the back seat while I cleaned the mess. (He HATES the back seat) It was EVERYWHERE, all over the seat of my car, my shorts. Thank goodness I happened to have a towel I was able to use to clean it. I have never been so angry with him. I know all puppies make mistakes but I had JUST brought him on a walk right before we left. Is this common at all? Have any of you ever left your baby in the car and returned to any special "surprises"? What is the best way to get him to stop? I feel like he knew exactly what he was doing and was "punishing" me for leaving him. I feel so horrible about slapping him, even though Im sure he couldnt even feel it since it was so light. I was just sooo mad. I normally would never leave him in the car, but this was such a quick trip in and out that I didnt think it would be a problem. Any advice?? |
Sorry that happened. I have no answer except to say, I guess Riley is telling you not to leave him in the car alone or else:eek: |

Advice - look before you sit next time! |
I would never leave them in the car not even 5 mins. Maybe it was his way of rebeling against you doing it again? :D Poor baby, maybe next time walk him before you leave him in there, but I would suggest you never do it again. Around here you get a ticket  |

Well maybe he's read the news that in 5 minutes someone could have taken him away from his mommy!! LOL! How old is this puppy? Maybe he is just too young to be expected not to make mistakes? Or maybe he has a case of seperation anxiety and "can't help himself?" I have a Maltese that I cannot leave in the car while I put mail in the mailbox cause he will leave a little nugget for me!! Even though I am never out of his sight!! |

#1. In my personal opinion I don't think any dog "punishes" us, I think that is something we humans kind of tagged to our dogs when they do "bad" things when we leave them etc. #2. When you tapped him on the butt, I am positive he had NO clue why you were angry or tapping his butt. A dog literally lives in the moment (lucky them) and even though he pooped in your car when you came back, he more then likely forgot he even did it. Imagine from his point of view, hes like.."Geeze, what did I do that I am being put in the back seat and my mom is angry at me". Remember, try and think from the dogs perspective, as much as we want to think of them as human and understanding everything in the human world, that is the biggest mistake we owners make. #3. He probably just had to "go" and had no where to "go" except on the seat. I understand your frustration, but the best thing you could have done is cleaned it up and chalked it up to an accident. Make sure your use a smell deterent when you get home. #4. Don't get me wrong, I totally understand your frustration, ewww, sitting on crap is not my idea of fun either, but don't take it personally, it just happened and move on from there. Hope the rest of the day is better. Kathy |

To me that says, they don't just "live in the moment"...he knew I had left him for a couple days, which I NEVER do, and he was holding a grudge that I had done that. It was 2 full days before he was completely back to his old self. Although, he only growled at me the first night. Just wanted to share, and OP, I sorry you had a poopy butt..I think he was mad at you, or why would he poop in "your" seat? |
thanks so much, now that you put it that way, I kinda feel bad. These dogs are just soo smart, you would think theyd know better. lol They are smart there is no doubt about it. When I train dog owners (and dogs) the first thing we look at is human behaviors and expectations. Too many times, the human is wanting the dog to think like we do. Watch Dog Whisper, he is always saying..dogs ARE NOT human they are not wired like we are, thats not to say they are not intelligent. Yes, they do things they shouldn't but my feeling is it is not to get back at us, but is generally because they have issue with being bored, frustrated, are young etc. A toddler might know he/she is not supposed to write on the wall with that big black permanent marker. How many of us have had it happen?!! Does it mean our toddler is dumb or mad at us? NO, they just want to do it. This is what makes our lives with our dogs so darned interesting. Imagine how boring your day would have been if you had not sat on crap right?!!! :) |
Aww just chalk it up to this """Poop Happens!!!!""" Im sure your not mad anymore mom, and now that its over with isnt it just funny to laugh about. |

I love Cesar - been to his seminars and online seminars and I'm a certified animal trainer for over 15 years. I have worked with MANY dog breeds and cats but the Yorkie always stands out. Their reasoning skills are high, they have an incredible ability to problem solve and they have no problem letting their owners know when they dislike something - and that isn't just human behavior. Animals correct one another all the time so why wouldnt they correct humans? |
Yorkies are so sensitive. If I leave Vickie alone for a minute to ran and get the mail, she will pee on my bed when I come back. They have minds of their own. |
AAAAWWWWWW...Riley just wanted to keep HIS seat clean...could have been worse...at least he didn't wipe on the steering wheel :D |

I DO believe that our dogs punish or retaliate against us!!! I know mine do for sure... He either was scred to be alone and pooped out of fear, did it to retaliate and show you not to leave him in the car or just had to go (<<<which I doubt). |

I stand by my opinion only because of my training experience of both dogs and horses (I have owned Yorkies my entire life as well as other breeds). I don't dispute the knowledge or skills of a Yorkie. Anyway, we could banter back and forth about training and what a dog thinks/doesn't think..etc..My point basically was when the dog went poo on the seat and the owner returned 5 min. later, that dog did not know what he did 5 min. ago and in my opinion would not understand why he was getting tapped on the butt, or his owner was displaying anger. |

Again, I totally stand by my opinion as far as dogs living in the moment. Talk to any reputable trainer or dog behaviorist and they will tell you that a dog will not remember what it did 5min ago. Thats why they say if you come home to a house that has been torn apart don't start yelling at the dog as he will have no understanding of what he/she did wrong. You will continue to believe that your dog held a grudge because you left him and its a comforting thought, I just don't buy into it thats all. Again, just my opinion which isn't based on anything other then 17+years training dogs and horses. I've been raised with Yorkies as well as Great Danes, trained and worked with many breeds. I never ever question the intelligence of dogs (or animals in general) and I have great respect for them. I just find that I am able to work with my clients dogs if I go with the feelings that they are a dog and not human in the sense that we reason. Please do not mistake my words, my dogs are like my human family and in my heart, I just go about the training methods with a different thought pattern. JMO |

I understand about you slapping his little butt. I have done it once to Holly too. Very light of course, but I think that the tone you use or the words you say are more effective than the touch. I'm sure your baby knows you love him, but there are rules and just cause he's a puppy doesn't mean he shouldn't follow them. |
I've never had a car accident, but I have had inside accidents all the time. I would let Jerzee or Maizee out and no less than 2 minutes after they walked back through the door, they were hard at work trying to pinch one off in the corner. I think it has something to do with me not paying attention to them as much as they would like, because of course I have to watch the cat so he doesn't run outside while trying to wrangle with two yorkies to get them back in. Revenge of the little yorkie puppies. . :) |
LOL sorry for laughing....I've never left mine in the car for anything but I bet if I did they may just leave me a little sign too...He may have been scared and pooped out of fear.....When Chanel or Cheri get really excited about going for rides or something - the first thing they do is run out a poop in glee lol - it's like the adrenelan rush causes this to happen.... Please be careful with the car....there's so many people stealing yorkies these days you don't want to take a chance.... |
