Why does he bite at my heels!!! Hi I am new to this site and also a first-time puppy owner. I have a little 17 week old yorkie named Tobey. He is the best little man ever!! I love him to death. I was VERY worried about behavior problems later in life so ever since I got him at 7 weeks I have been very diligent about training and discipline. I have been suprised with how smart he is. I feel like I have done a good job establishing that I am the pack leader with him and my ONLY complaint is that when he really wants attention and I am not giving him any at the moment, he growls and bites at my heels as i am walking through the house. I have consistently tried saying no or uh,ah firmly and then turning back around to ignore him but it doesn't seem to be working. With everything else, he is really receptive to me telling him no. Any advice on how to stop this because it's really annoying and sometimes hurts! Is it aggressive or just playbul biting? how do you tell? he also growls and barks when playing which we are trying to stop him from doing. |
My guy does the same thing when he's bored. I find when I exercise him more, he goes for the pants legs less. You might also try giving him an alternative, a favorite chew toy or kong with peanut butter to occupy him at times like that. My suspicion is that he thinks the rise he gets out of you is great fun. Try having no reaction and just presenting him with the alternative. Good luck. |
I cant say that i'm an expert but there are many here who will give you more advice. I have however read enough on here to know that ur pup is completely normal. My baby does the same thing. They can be very disciplined and intelligent but we have to face the facts...they are dogs and not just dogs but puppies. All he wants is for you to play with him. I get the same thing allll the time. She doesnt care what i'm doing. All she knows is that its time to play and biting my feet is the easiest way to get my attention. I think iyour right in saying "no" but honestly i'v been working on this for almost 6 months and i gotta tell you....when she wants to play she bites my feet...always has, and always will. I also think the growling and barking is normal when playing. Thats how dogs communicate...unless he is agressive i think he's just playing. |
sorry I don't have any advice....just wanted to say that my Truffles does the same thing and it makes us crack up! She doesn't do it as much as when she was younger, but we kinda instigate it :rolleyes: We shuffle through the house making the same growling noise that she does and she chases our ankles! I think it is too darned cute! And welcome to YT! |
Xena does it too - when we are on a walk and she wants to be picked up she bites at my toes. I have just always given in to her requests to make her stop. Good luck! |
Thanks for the advice, it's comforting to know that my yorkie is normal. I think I am just so paranoid about having a dog with "behavior issues" from watching the Dog Whisperer show on national geographic channel. and then I am worried that my paranoia is going to cause him to have some issue. I guess I am just a new mommy and worry too much. Does anybody else worry about having a well behaved pet? because I think that if your pet is out of control, it can reflect poorly on your pet parenting skills, kind of like with kids. Thoughts? This is fun to talk to other yorkie owners!! it seems like everyone else has such big dogs and yorkies are definetely unique! |
Chachi did that as a pup too but he outgrew doing it as he got older. I would say by one yr old he wasnt doing it anymore |
Hi! and welcome to YT!! And congratulations on being a first time puppy mommy. I think I am safe in saying that your Yorkie is normal. This seems to be common behavior in our pups:D Just wanted to say that AprilLove used to do that to, now she is 15 months old and doesn't do that, but she does bang the back of my heels with a squeeky:D toy when she wants me to play!! lol |
One thing I have found it that now at 6 months Xena is starting to lose that puppy look and looks more "mature" so I have to remind myself that she is still a puppy and she will act like a puppy for a while. I do want her to be well behaved and am always on the look out for bad behavior patterns. Although she has been really good from the start - thank goodness. She is my first dog ever so I look for advise and resources to make sure I am doing it right. This site is the best resource by far!:p |
If you find out can you pass the info my way! Buddah does this and it drives me CRAZY! Plus I get afraid I'm going to hurt him. Sometimes he grabs on really hard to my pants and before I can realize he's flying infront of me. |
