Pet treats recalled for salmonella Bacteria could also infect people who handle tainted jerky Updated: 5:47 p.m. ET April 2, 2007 A pet food company announced Monday a nationwide recall of dog, cat and ferret treats that could be contaminated with salmonella. The bacteria could infect both animals and people handling the food. The announcement is unrelated to the more extensive recall of melamine-tainted dog and cat food that led to kidney failure in pets around the country. Eight in One Inc., a division of United Pet Group Inc., is recalling all packages of Dingo Chick?N Jerky, Dingo Kitty Chicken Jerky and Dingo Ferret Chicken Jerky. Salmonella can cause serious infections in pets and children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems. In pets, salmonella can cause diarrhea, fevers, vomiting, loss of appetite, lethargy and abdominal pain. Animals that do not get sick can infect other pets or humans. The bacteria could also infect people handling the pet treats. Humans infected with the salmonella can experience fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal cramps. It could also cause more serious problems such as arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation and urinary tract problems. Eight in One has received a report of a dog infected by salmonella, which lead to further testing of this product. Some, but not all, of the samples tested were contaminated. The treats were sold around the country at Target, PetSmart and other stores. The company asks consumers to throw away unused portions of the jerky treats. To obtain a refund, call 888-232-9889. |
You gotta be kidding! What next! How do these things continue to happen? Aren't there restrictions, testing and guides to follow when producing food? I hope these manufactures who are involved in all of this get fined and people just stop buying what they make and put them out of business! |

I am sure that many pets have died from either "mystery illnesses" or what was believed to be poisoning from eating some raw food out of the garbage, ect. Most likely, most people aren't able to have autopsies done or don't think to have one. Until this is over, I am not going to be feeding any of my animals pre-packaged food (and maybe not even after that). I though about this the other day. My family eats whole food, organic, ect and I put a lot of though and research into what goes into our mouths. Why am I not doing the same for my furbabies? Honestly, I just buy a bag of what I believe to be good food and treats, and really have no idea how or where it is made. I don't do that to the rest of the family, why am I doing that to them? I need to learn a lot more about what is going into their mouths. |
OMG I can't take this. I seriously cannot. I have been acting like a crazy person looking at every single label/brand on all the food/treats in my house and we have ALOT! This is just scaring me to death!!! :( |
You know, it's strange. Over the years my vet has given me a hard time about giving my dogs 'homemade food' and to only give them dog food. Well, I have always done both anyway. I have always felt, ' what's more natural, food I make or processed?' Well, now like many, I am almost afraid to feed my dogs 'dog food'!!!! It's frigntening. All of us here know our furbabies are our children. Many people out there think 'well, they're JUST dogs' I see that the responsible manufacturers have NO plans on 'replacing' these dead dogs for the people that have lost them. I know I have thousands in my dogs, and not only for the money but I would be so devistated!!!! I just pray for the people that have lost their precious animals, and that they get to the bottom of this mess SOON!!! |
People have been taking their dogs to the Vets. in record number for all sorts of medical problems without realizing it's the dog food. Then the Vets. generally put them on a "percription" dog food and make even more money off of the sick animals suffering. When will people realize that dog food is not real food. Dog food is made from road kill, lab animals, animals that have died of all sorts of illnesses and diseases and so on. Why anyone would want to feed thier babies all the nasty things that make up a dog food has me wondering. People need to back up and take a good hard look at the dog food industry and do some homework. |
Bump. Making sure everyone sees this. |
