Keeping them cool in the summer heat. It's going to be about 80 degrees here again and I'm wondering what is the best way to keep my two cool on a walk. Rocky still has his black hair and it seems to absorb lots of heat. After a short while, his tongue is hanging out and we turn around and go back home. I thought he was just getting thirsty but once inside, he barely drinks. My husband says hanging his tongue out is a way for him to regulate his temperature since they don't sweat. I'm going to start taking water with us, but I was wondering if anybody had any ideas for keeping cool. We'll be out and about a lot this summer so I want to be prepared. Would a spray bottle be good? |
A spray bottle is a great idea and misting them as you walk. Plus you can open the bottle and let them take a drink if needed. I heard we are getting a cold front come by on Wed. Temps are expected to fall down to 55 as a high. Wow, what a change. I love the warmer temps, since we have a pool. But also worry about how hot it could get this summer if our temps are this warm now. T. |
not sure if i can help! well i take mine walk they get thristy to like that i just take lots of water but they drink when i give to them...so keep taking water for ..and this summer i love to be outside so i have all ready got them a little plastic pool for them to to keep cool..:aimeeyork so just do as u think, mine have there black hair still all and buddys is getting really thick and maddys is ! 'so fun in the sun' i say':) good luck maddy and buddy hot here to day 80ds:) |
Is there any water supplement that keeps them hydrated? Gatorade was what we used for the kids or something else with electrolytes. Anything for canines? |
when it starts to get really hot here i cut their hair short it grows back quickly but they also like ice cubes to play with and a shady place |
Ice cubes sound good! Do you worry about choking? |
Mine just like to lick the ice cubes. They're too busy being curious to stick the whole cube in their mouth :p. They can barely get a grip on it as it is! |
You can also freeze apple juice, Pedialyte and other natural juices. They love it. A molded plastic baby pool would be great too. |
You can buy bandanas that you soak in water and they stay cool for hours. Here's a link to give you the idea. I just picked the first link, if you are interested do a search for different styles and prices. http://thepuppyshop.com/apparel2.html |
