someone i know got a yorkie someone in one of my classes got a yorkie...... he said it was a 2 lbs baby girl (they will be getting her spayed)...... i didnt really get to talk to him that much, but it sounded like he really didnt do his research........ first of all, he was calling her a teacup ....... and he was shocked that it took me until toby was 6 or 7 months to completely potty train him (and cmon people......... that is EXCELLENT!!!!, some yorkies arent even trained after a year, so the way i figure i am lucky)..... he didnt even realize that hypoglycemia is a HUGE problem in babies and lil ones, he said "oh yeah, the breeder mentioned something about that.... but she doesnt have any signs" (i asked him if he knew what the signs were, and he said NOT REALLY!!)... it just kills me when people go out and get a yorkie or any dog for that matter (on a whim........ or because it is the "cutest thing") and dont do their research before hand!!!! I was good and didnt say anything offensive...... but CMON!!!! i gave him all the best advice in the few minuits we had to talk....... |
Its good he met up with you. Unfortunately there are alot of people who purchase these dogs at pet stores and probably know nothing about them. He will have to be careful because tinys are fragile especially when they are puppies. Good job letting him know obout hypoglycemia. That is something he definitely needed to know. |
I agree... you cant really say anything at this point about him not doing his homework... at least you can keep checking in on the puppy when you see him in class and offer advice and info. I bet he is going to need it, especially with the housebreaking issues! |
Oh man, maybe you can give him a few pointers or two to ease the new-puppy transition. I think a lot of people these days try to find the "small" Yorkies just for the reason you expressed, because it's "cute" and "cute to have" without caution to all the problems and all that. |
he reminds of a girl i know.. wanting me to get her a "teacup" so she can breed her. i was so pissed.. cause this was the 10th time she bugged me.. and i told her, you can't breed teacups.. they don't even have any private parts.. lol.. i was being a meanie, so what! she just wanted a "teacup" to sport around and throw it away when it wasn't cute anymore. :mad: |
How old is this guy? Is he an adult? Did you tell him about YT? Most breeders will spend several hours training a new yorkie owner and even write specific instructions down as well as be available 24/7 if any issues arise. Hopefully he is in close touch with his breeder. Who watches the puppy when he is in class? |
dunno, like i said we didnt have much time to talk because we had to take our final.... all the questions you asked (i have no clue)..... i did mention yorkie talk so maybe we will see him around (i told him this is the best place to go when you have questions...... :D ) and yes he is older than i am, he is 26 |
Just a thot, make a list of things mentioned here and what you can think of off the top of your head and give it to him. Maybe he doesn't have a clue as to what he's gotten himself into. You said "he got a Yorkie", did he buy her or was she a gift? What is her age? Pirogue was 8 weeks and 2.10, he wasn't a "teacup" but at that time, I didn't know. He felt like a "teacup" because he was so small. I go over to PuppyFind and see 2# pups advertised as "teacups" all the time. I guess they are "teacups" at that young of an age but boy do they grow. |
he has the puppy (he bought it)....... the PETSHOP he got it from said it was 8 weeks....... but the vet he brought it too said it is not eight weeks .. it is older, more likely 12 or so :confused: and it does not weigh two lbs!!! it is SMALLER!!!!! So far it has seemed healthy (from what i have heard.. i havent seen it) but still, i wish he would have asked advice i could have pointed him in a "safer" direction |

I think I said this before, but the first time I had a yorkie, I had babysat him for a friend of my sister over christmas. KJ was 3# and 3yoa. His owner asked my sister if I wanted him as he was always filthy, wasn't potty trained (he thought a dog wouldn't potty in his cage). He was a college student with two jobs, living in a highrise apartment building in downtown dallas. He kept in this tiny cage almost 100% of the time. I said 'potty training requires the dog have a chance to potty elsewhere.' He was really a nice boy, I am not sure where he got KJ or how long he had him; I was just glad he gave him to me. :happyboun I found him to be perfectly potty trained. He lived in my lap or at my heel all the time. Make sure he knows they can become hypoglycemic, needs food and WATER - ALL the time. Maybe you could offer babysitting service in case he needs to go on vacation or something. |
