Collars...on...off??? I am wondering if its bad for Lulu to have a collar on all the time? And if so why? I don't keep one on her all the time now and sometimes she wears a harness but is it bad for me to keep it on her if I am not using a leash. I appreciate any feed back...I haven't posted to many things but the help I have gotten I really appreciate. Thanx, Me and Lulu:aimeeyork |
hey.. personally i would NEVER have a collar on... i know.. they are cute and there are like NO cute harnesses... but i've heard too many horror stories about Yorkies accidentily hanging themselves on their collar.. and since they have such delicate tracheas.. i'd just say never.. Layla only wears a harness when she is going out because i find if she wears it all day the hair under the harness doenstn' grow. hope that helped |
Cooper & Carley wear collars 24/7. It has a tag on there with their names and our phone #'s. Although they are microchipped, I feel much better that they have visual identification at all times. We don't use the collars for leashes, they wear vest harnesses when we walk them...but I feel more secure with that visual ID. We have never had a problem with the collars getting caught on anything either. They are never outside by themselves, but I have a real paranoia of them getting off by themselves somehow. Just keep in mind...WWFMMNNWFY!! (What works for me may not necessarily work for you) |

I agree I only put on the harness when they are going to the vet or out in public somewhere other wise they never have one on. I only use a harness, a collar seems like it would be to easy to hurt them at least a harness doesn't put all the pressure on their necks if they would happen to take off while on the leash. |
Princess wears a collar 24/7 too (unless shes having her bath:p )... and when I talk her out for a walk, I just use a harness too.. I feel a lot safer knowing that if she ever escaped or whatever, then at least she would have her nametag on.. |
Percy wear a collar with an ID tag all the time. I've had too many experiences with little ones running out the door when they see something shiny, fun, interesting, ect....even though they had never run out before. Just makes me feel a lot safer. He is micro chipped also, but, I just know that when I see a dog running around, the first thing I do is look for a tag and number. It is just easier. If the collar is lost, then the microchip is just a back up. |

I know they make a safety collar for cats with elastic so that if they were to get caught on something they would be able to pull there heads out of it. Then you wouldn't have to worry about them hanging themselves. Not sure if it would work for dogs but...it's a thought. |
Important Even if you just put collars on them for identification or for a bell like i did my advice is dont! I never knew anything about not supposed to wear collars till after my experience. One night i heard gracie crying and like going crazy like i had never heard before ... she had gotten her collar in her mouth and it was stuck there! If i would have not been there she would have prolli strangled herself or died from trying to get out of it! It was very sad for me to see and i immediately cut it off! It does not have to be loose at all for them to get it in there mouths! hers wasnt! it is also bad for their tracheas !Hopefully this story makes you realize harnesses are better for them in many ways! Dont take the risk with collars!!!! |

Both Venus and Adonis wear their collars all the time. It has all thier tags on them, just in case one would get loose, and lost. Both are also micrichipped. When I walk them, they wear a harness. |
I don't use collars since Yorkies are prone to collasped tracheas. I use harnesses on my girls and previous dogs. I always take them off when we're in the house since it tangles their hair and I worry they will somehow find a way to get it caught on something. |
Collars with ID tags are always on my dogs. They've each escaped at least once and I'd hate to lose them without tags on. |
Mine always have collars on! but they NEVER have a leash attached ..when we go outside or on a walk i put their harnesses on them |
