I thought Yorkies were non-shedding ! My DH surprised me at Christmas with the cutest ball of fluff that we named Ryder , then a month later his brother got turned back to the breeder because the lady that bought him didn't realize he was going to be so much work :eek: . So we took Tucker in ( making this a 3 dog household as we have a cocker as well ) . The BOYS are not particularily fond of being groomed and so I have to cuddle them tight against me to brush them ......well I am covered in hair after this ...I thought Yorkies were non-shedding ! Will this change as they get older ? |
You sure hes not a yorkie mix? if he isn't then maybe he has a skin problem..my yorkie never even shed one single hair. |
Every dog will shed some hair -- but some shed very little -- more like humans. Yorkies should shed very little -- no more than you do. If you are being covered in hair when brushing, something is amiss. Are they tangled badly, is the hair breaking off? Are you making sure not to comb or brush them dry -- misting with a little conditioner mixed with mostly water or a product made just for this purpose. Is it possible one or both have a problem like hypothyroidism that can increase hair loss? Are they purebred Yorkies? Registered? |
Yorkie's hair is very similar to our hair they do not have an under coat like other dog breeds. when you comb your hair a few of your hair comes out & it goes for the same w/ yorkie's hair but if you just touch them it doesn't shed most of the time & if they do it's very minimum. |
Yorkies' hair are like human hair - they keep growing all the time and some can come out while brushed/combed. But they're not losing hair like other breeds do. In fact, the only time I come across Pepper's hair is on the comb - and I find mine all the time :rolleyes: . If the hair comes out like you're describing, he might not be a pure Yorkie or might have a skin problem :confused: |
Everyone here has given great advice. It is only natural to shed, hair dies and brushing helps eliminate the dead hair and stimulate blood flow to encourage new growth. If you are holding them tightly this may be causing more stress which may be the reason they are shedding more. Just a suggestion: Try walking the dogs for about 30-45 minutes prior to grooming. Really tire them out. Then calmly put them on your lap, start petting them with your hand. Add the brush after they have calmed and sometimes will even fall asleep. This creates a much calmer environment and they see this as a reward not a punishment. I'd just add that if you think they are really shedding too much I would visit the vet. |
I did find more hair on my clothing than normal when they were changing from their puppy coat to their adult coat but once that's done they don't shed. Riley used to fight me when I groomed him but he's growing out of that now and he'll actually come to me to be first when I get their brush out. |
Thanks everybody for the info ....the parents to my Boys are both purebred and registered so they are purbred ( unless Momma had a " fling " with their boxer when nobody was looking !:D ) .... as they are only 5 months old , I think it may be puppy fur as their coloring is now rapidly changing ( Daddy was silver ) ...interesting to watch what color they will be ! |
That's nice that you have the brothers. I have not experienced any hair coming off Buddy at all. When I brush him, now that his coat is growing, I do see little hairs in the brush but never on my furniture or clothing. |
If the amount of shedding you describe as "covered in hair" just doesn't sound right for a yorkie. Either your yorkie is a mix, or there is a skin problem. We may get a stray hair or two when we brush her, but that is it. |
:welcome4: To Yorkie Talk!!!!! You're right, they're growing up and getting rid of those little puppy hairs. You'll think you're getting enough hair to knit a sweater!!! Pretty soon their pretty adult hair will be getting longer and the puppy coat will be gone. Keep up with the brushing now and you won't have too many little matts from them blowing their coat. |
between the two pups it is a LOT of fine dark hair but it is always the dark hair so I will just see what happens as they lose the baby hair and the adult fur comes in . The one pup has a beautiful thick coat and the other ( the one we bought last ) has very thin hair and it is wild ...curly and unkempt looking regardless to what you do with it . He is also the more high-strung of the two , his brother is so laid back !!! They were at the groomers a couple weeks ago ( the same one we use for our cocker ) and they were so stressed from being there - grooming has not been an easy chore lately . There is another groomer that I may give a try as I was not happy my BOYS were so unhappy ! Thanks everybody ! |
