Hey there yorkietalkers! I come to you very new to yorkies, but not to dogs in general. :) I'm a doberman fancier and am expecting my first pup in about 12 weeks. (Yay!) However, my wonderful boyfriend will be graduating West Point in 4 years and would love to have a yorkie all his own. Cute, huh? ::grin:: I want to become well versed in the genetics and breed idiosyncrasies before he brings a pup home so that we both can keep his baby happy and healthy. Can anyone point me in the right direction with a few insightful articles?

PS - If I have anything to say about it, this yorkie will see an agility course when its little bones are ready for it. :) Maybe the OB ring too. Gotta earn your supper (especially since I plan to do raw/cooked)!

A great big "howdy" to you to. No really, from my Minnesota accent it would be "HI GUYS". LOL. Glad you joined YT. I have a little zoo. My bigger doggies are a Belgian Malinois and a Czech import German Shep. My little babies are my Yorkie, Bijou, a Japanese Chin named Ping Woo, a Pap/Peke mix named Buedda, two rescue kittens (15 wks old) which have names but seem to come to kitty kitty best, LOL, two hermit crabs that also have names but can't recall them and a bowl full of sea monkies (need a magnifying glass to see those little suckers).

Both the Malinois and Shep are Schutzhund trained. The Malinois is protection, obedience and agility trainined. Just got his certification (about a year ago) for drug detection. The Shep is obedience and agility, though she isn't good at either one. Just too lazy. LOL

I'm kidding. That's actually a good idea. I've heard YTers discuss books from time to time, and I've bought a few without finding one that I'd consider to be a definitive source for my pet-quality Yorkies. But it would be nice to have a list of references together. Maybe this is the place to do it.

In general, Yorkies are big dogs trapped in little dogs' bodies. They are energetic, intelligent and curious, yet loving and loyal. They can be any kind of dog you want them to be as long as they're loved. My (almost) 3-year-old is currently in his third agility class. He'll never be the fastest in the class, but he understands the sport as well or better than the big dogs.

Props to your boyfriend for not needing a big dog to impress his friends!

I couldn't agree with you more. I can read books all day long, but what I value most is to talk to someone who has "been there, done that, seen that, etc."

Wow! Can I ask how you manage the prey drive of a good Sch dog with the size and um, energy of a yorkie? My dobie shouldn't be too terribly drivey, he's not full working lines but both parents have a WAC. I'm going to do a ton of socialization to little dogs, but sometimes when little things run...

Thank you for the warm welcome everyone! I'm thrilled to meet such an active knowledgeable group! Also, puppy pictures! These guys are the latest litter from Sharon Karam at Kettle Cove. Mom is a beautiful blue with a decent coat (hard to find!), and Dad is an amazing dober-hunk with a really solid head piece. LOVE this stud! He's also delta therapy certified.

He has wonderful prey drive, but even more so is FOOD DRIVE. LOL Believe it or not but the Malinois goes to Schutzhund training on Sunday mornings. He can take any grown man down in the bite suit. He is SUPER!!! Yet, he loves to hog the couch, wrestle in the bed and basically push his 100 lb. body around. He does play with the Yorkie. He has to lay on the ground to do this and whip his big head around. All of my zoo get along great. It's almost as though it is expected and everyone knows this. I honestly don't know what I would do if I got an animal that didn't like everyone else. Everyone is a house animal also. We share everything and that's the way it's suppose to be.
