Yorkie and Puppy Interaction - Please Help
 

I am hoping to find some advice from experienced Yorkie owners.
My future wife currently owns a 2.5 year old Male Yorkie. He is a great dog, and has never showed any aggression or fear towards other dogs, large or small.
I have a new 10 week old puppy, a Male boxer, and we have been trying to socialize them so they will have an easy transition when we marry.

The problem: The boxer puppy is very playful and at 10 weeks, double the size of the Yorkie. His style of play is to bark and paw/box, and chase the Yorkie. He seems fond of chewing on his hair.
The Yorkie, on the other hand, doesn't play. He is very interested in the puppy and shows no aggression towards him, but will not "rough house" with him. He will walk to him to smell, but when the boxer begins to play, he runs. Most of the time he runs himself into a corner or up against a wall and will fall and cower while barking and snapping. He never seems to actually make contact with the boxer to say "ENOUGH" and put the puppy in his place.

What can we do to help these 2 get along and form a bond? Will the Yorkie ever be interested in playing?
Anyone with a large breed puppy and Yorkie experience please help.

I believe there are quite a few members here with a bigger dog and a Yorkie. I only have my Yoda, but have you tried getting down and playing with both of them at the same time? Maybe the Yorkie is a bit scared and not quite sure what to think of the 'big' puppy. Maybe take them on walks at the same time? Or just try to get them used to each other. Will they play fetch together if you throw something and have both retrieve it? I'd say it just takes time and the more interaction they have, the better off they will be, but for the first few interactions, be there with them to make sure nothing bad happens. :)

Hey! Your little Yorkie is just protecting himself as best he can without getting mean with your Boxer puppy. You will need to watch them very carefully together as the puppy can accidentally hurt the Yorkie VERY easily. Yorkies have tiny bones and delicate joints, despite their "big dog" attitudes. It is normal for the puppy to want to roughouse with the Yorkie, but I wouldn't ever allow it. You and your fiance need to get down on the floor with both dogs and absolutely control their actions. Your fiance can hold her dog in a very protective way while your puppy sniffs and explores him a bit. But if the Yorkie doesn't want the puppy to sniff him, don't push it. You need to be the one to say to the Boxer, "Enough!" and put him in his place. After all, YOU are the Alpha Dog and your puppy needs to learn that ASAP.
