Two yorkies I only have one yorkie male who is soon to be nine years. I hate to leave him by himself,he seems so sad when I leave for work. Does anybody have any feedback on the pros and cons of me getting another male yorkie. He gets along well with other smaller dogs. He plays with them alot. Thanks |
I have two a boy and a girl. I got them both when they were puppies 8 weeks apart in age. They get along well and keep each other company. They also do some bad things together like get into the waste paper basket etc. The younger one the girl follows the older around. I am sure if your dogs gets along with other dogs he will do fine. Its fun with two. Good luck. |
Zsa Zsa is 13 years old will be 14 in June . Recently , I have had the chance to have another one , Jade is 1 year old . If you have another one , be sure to supervise them . I didn't want to have a young puppy with the older one because she is very sick . It took them about a week to be friendly . Little Zsa Zsa Have had no intentions to lose her place . |
When I 1st got Missy she was the only yorkie in the house, she was sad when I left and acted a little sad or shy when I returned home. I felt bad for her so I got her a companion Max. Now when I leave they are both playing and happy, they give me lots of kisses when I leave, they play and nap all day, then when I come home they are both so happy to see me. Having 2 yorkies works out great for me, they keep eachother company when I am not there and they have lots of fun together :D |
2 YORKIES = DOUBLE YOUR FUN I am so glad we got another yorkie - I loved having Chanel to myself ...but getting Cheri was a great decision ! They're like Laverne & Shirley...each different ...but inseperable |
I think yorkies are like potato chip You can never have just one! Your yorkie will do great with a sibling and so will you!! I have two and it is so much fun to watch them and interact. |
I wouldn't get a very young puppy because he/she might be too much for your older dog. But then again an older puppy(over a year) might be pretty set in his/her ways and be too demanding of your attention. Think over the pros and cons of different ages, get more opinions before you decide but I would get another for company. Your dog may not take too well to another male, alpha male and all that. Is he fixed? If so I'd say another male would work out ok. Sylvia |
I have a female yorkie, 1 yr. 9 months, just got a male, he is now 12 weeks. Sachi (male) bites Bellas hair, they run around "fighting"; yesterday bella knocked Sachi to the ground, had him on his back, was biting his head (he was crying) and then started dragging him as I approached. I have to watch them together constantly, not sure if it is fighting or playing, but I know Sachi cries a lot when they do "play". So in my case, it isn't double my fun, it's double the work to make sure the new yorkie isn't eaten while I am not looking. :thumbdown I do adore them both though  |
Double the fun..... I also have 2 yorkies... Meeko & Molly. I love them both. They get along great, the look out for one another and keep themselves company when we all go to work or school. It is great to see them cuddle together at nights. It is a joy to come home and be welcomed by both your furbabies!!! I give you a  !!!!!!!! Good Luck. |
I have a one year old male that is a little lover and I got a 12 wk old female a month ago. The first two weeks were constant stress bc my little girl, Bunny is very fiesty and has a dominant personality that makes up for what she lacks in size. They are now best friends and attached at the hip, but I will say that I was a little worried for Tino bc he acted really depressed at first, but that quickly went away. I just think your situation is different bc your yorkie in 9 years old and won't be as tolerant of a little puppy crawling all over him. I have also hear that its best to mix genders... boys have domination issues that come through in marking problesm and that two females together can be very high strung, whereas they would be more relaxed in a different situation. |
I Have 2 yorkies, a boy and a girl. and here i am now.. wanting a 3rd! it is double the fun!!.. it can have it's ups and downs.. but nonetheless it's always fun when theres two more yorkies to love. i got Oreo first when he was 8 weeks old.. and when he turned 4 months was when i got Ginger. They were a match made in heaven. they are best friends, girlfriend/boyfriend whatever you want to call them.. they love each other and it makes my life easier!.. i never have to leave them alone! cause they supervise themselves! best of luck! |
Well, gosh darn it, everyone else highly recommends it, why am I having difficulties????? I'm going to laugh until I cry:) |
Thanks for everyones feedback. You have given me alot to think about. |
I have 7 beasties and much of the time is is NOT 7 times the fun! LOL. Seriously, the happiness and safety are your concerns when adding a buddy. Your baby daounds like he will do niely. I would advise that you arrange for a week off work when you get the new youngun.. |
I will arrange to have some time off of work. That is a good idea. |
If you don't want to make the purchase but want another dog, you should go to the ASPC. They will allow you to "adopt" a dog and if it doesn't work out, you can return it to them. They really want to find the right fit for you and their dogs. This way, you can make sure your little guy really likes the other dog! No strings attached and a heck of a lot cheaper! I think this is what I will do if we decide to get a second dog. |
That is another good idea. I would love to give a homeless dog a good home. |
1 Attachment(s) Here are my two yorkies..... |
Here a thread about adding a new dog to a household with an older dog. We got Bo cause Mom wanted a Yorkie, LOL, and to give Woody, our 8 year old Schnauzer a companion. It's one of the best decisions I've ever made!! http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...ighlight=Woody |
Ok, I am sorry for bringing back an very old thread, but I just had to comment on this! I've only had my Lea for four months (she's almost 7 months now) and I've been thinking about adding a new pup to my household. I do work full-time, so it this a kinder option for my girl, so she can have a playmate? I hate thinking of my baby not having anyone to play with. What about puppy school? Has anyone tried that? |
I would suggest getting a female.... My Rocky and Mickey usually get along (Mickey is neutered, Rocky is not).... but sometimes it just seems like Rocky starts fights with Mickey over nothing (my attention usually).... Rocky is 3 pounds and Mickey is over 8 pounds... there is no way Rocky can win a fight but he always starts them.... I think females are more laid back and don't fight nearly as much as the males do (just my opinion). They usually give my males kisses... Best of luck with your decision! :) |
I think getting a companion is a good idea. I would suggest that if you can afford it to take them to obedience classes cause they need some structure when they are alone and I think the classes help to settle them down. I can't say that two boys are any better than two girls. I had a boy and a girl at first and they got along great, but then again I'm a stay at home mom. My male is 3 months younger but we had him a little over a month before we got the female who was close to 6 months. Two of the same age might not get along as well as one a little older and one a little younger. I do have two siblings by the same parents but not litter mates. The older one did not take very kindly to his brother showing up at first but it's been a little over 2 months now and they get along fine. It was like he was annoyed that a sibling showed up. What is ASPC sorry i just don't know |
I don't know all the initials but the last 3 letters are to Prevent Cruelty to Animals. You left off the last letter it's: ASPCA. Sylvia |
