Izzy is getting Neutered
 
I am getting Izzy neutered tomorrow. What should I expect for recovery? Any tips on how to make his recovery comfortable? Is he going to be completely helpless for a while?

Im sure the vet will give me some pointers but I just wanted to get your input. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Is your vet going to give him pain meds. Some do and some dont. He will need to stay calm. No jumping,only going outside to go potty then back in. You cant bathe him for 10 days. With Chachi the hardest part was keeping him calm because he came home and acted as if nothing had happened

Yes, the vet is giving him meds. Moderate pain meds. He said he would give me some to take home with me. Thanks!

I hope everything is going well with Izzy today. My boy is four months old so I am total useless, but I do wish you the best of luck!!! :)

Thank you very much. Im getting ready to leave and pick him up now. I called a while ago and they said he was fine.

just got max fixed last friday.. went very well, he was sent home w/pain meds. but only needed it for one day. just keep an eye on the wound and make sure it does not get to red ..... it should be pink and alittle puffy from the swelling...best wishes on keeping him from jumping,,,we failed but he is just fine

I only have experience with spaying, but I only gave Sissy the pain meds the next morning and she never whined or slowed down at all!! But, she also spent the night of her spay at the vet. I couldn't pick her up till the next morning....

Kodak did fine, I was worried to but the vet said he was up and ready to go. lol I figured he just wanted to get the heck up outta there. He'll be fine.

When Max was neutered, he was sleepy the next day and then acted like nothing happened. I couldn't keep him still, no jumping, etc., he didn't get (or need) pain meds and I took off that collar as soon as I got him home. It was bigger than he was. Just keep an eye on his stitches to be sure they don't get red and inflamed. Max's never did.

I hope "Elvis" is doing good. Jeter was kinda mellow for a couple days as I recall. What helped a ton was putting him in a babies onesie instead of making him wear a silly cone. He was much more comfortable and snuggly in the onesie. Let us know how the little guy is doing

Archie and Willie were kind of out of it the rest of the day of their surgery and part of the next day. They had the paid meds that evening and the next morning, but that was all they appeared to need. I really think they had more pain from the teeth they had pulled than from the surgery.

By the second day it was as if nothing had happened. Neither the cones or onsies worked for them --- they could take them off, so we just watched and corrected when they started licking the incisions. They didn't bother them after the second day.

Hope your little guy has it as easy.

Hi everyone,

Thank you so much for the well wishes. Izzy aka "Elvis" is doing fine.:) He's in a little bit of pain. The vet gave me some meds but I cant give it to him until tomorrow morning. I got home around 6:30 and we hung out on the couch most of the evening then went to sleep. Of course it is very hard keeping him still. When I had to get up and do anything, I put him in his crate so that he wouldnt move too much. He just woke up..which is why Im on the computer at 2am! Thank God I took the day off tomorrow:rolleyes: The one thing that is annoying him is the band they put around his front paw where the IV went in. I cant remove it until tomorrow. He's been trying to bite it off.:( I think that is what is keeping him up. I just fed him...his appetite has not changed!

I was going to keep him at the vet overnight but they do not have overnight care...which was very strange to me. They leave the dogs/cats there overnight and come back in the morning....hmmmm. :eek: So I decided to pick him up today.

Anyway, I think he will be fine. Thanks again for thinking of me, I will update you tomorrow on his progress...uh I mean later today.;)

Thank you! He was kind of mellow earler but now he's wired!! They didnt give me a cone at all. Maybe I will get a onesie for him, good idea:)

Yeah, Izzy couldnt contain himself when I went to pick him up...he doesnt like the vet and Im sure he really hates it now!:rolleyes:

Thanks for asking, Im doing fine. Just tired...he's a little wired now and its driving me nuts. He keeps wining and walking in circles. I try to keep him still and he struggles....oh I think he is getting tired now...good, I think I can go back to sleep. Good night...or good morning.:)

Hi,

Izzy is doing fine this morning. He's being a little stubborn about going to the bathroom because he thinks its time to play! :p

But Im pissed because they shaved a big chunk of his front leg hair to put the IV and Cathedar!! I knew they were going to put it in him but I didnt know they were going to shave him like they did!! Now he looks crazy.:mad: Did the vet do this when you had yours spayed or neutered?

I was thinking about Izzy and thought I'd check in to see if all is back to normal.:) Sorry to hear about his little shaved leg, but he still is perfect, how could he be anything el:D se.

Yes, they shaved a spot on Jeters leg, but did not tape or bandage it. My vet is the same way, nobody there with them overnight, so I did like you and picked him up rather than leave him there. At least if he did need medical attention we could have taken them to the Emergency vet. But thank goodness that was needed with either of our boys. Glad to hear that Izzy is doing well and hope to see you again soon.

I'm glad he did well. I've worked in a vet's office as a tech, and we always shave. I figure it's much better to shave the leg than to have to poke the poor baby a bunch of times because it's hard to find the vein. Much easier to have a nice clean leg too, don't want an infection! It'll grow back pretty quickly. :)

Thank you for checking on him! He's been sleeping a lot which is expected...although he sleeps a lot anyway. I was upset about the shaved leg but I guess I will get over it...I have no choice. You are right, he's still cute!:p

Yeah, you are right. Im glad I picked him up. I probably wouldnt have been able to sleep! I guess I wish they would have said it up front when they told me he could stay. It worked out for the best anyway. ;) Look forward to seeing you guys soon!
